I Have Lost a Friend Over the Election

Posted on 10/29/2008 2:12:34 PM PDT by libertarian9

I have been an Independent for most of my life but this year I registered as a Republican.

A have a friend who I've known for 22 years. He is an Obama supporter.

He has ended our friendship because I am supporting McCain and not Obama.

He has gone so far as to say that I'm not the person he thought I was all these years. I am angry and sad and a little stunned.

Anyone else having similar experiences over the election?

Your newness, number of posts, and lack of responses to your own threads makes some of us suspicious.

If you’re truly being passive aggressive about it then stop. It's a sickness . . .

I desparately need to, but my family's Democratic/secular/pro-abortion leanings go right to what is most important for life and eternity. When I think about getting together with them I usually shut down or go into maximum avoidance mode.

Why would you want to be “friends” with a communist?

Darn it. I just spotted this thread I wish I would’ve been here from the beginning.

Obviously this is a:

“Tee-It-Up” post.

The IMs are sent out.

Then the newbie posse always arrives shortly with their special brand of “reluctant” pessimism.

Apparently you didn’t really KNOW this person or they would not treat you this way. I would suggest you make friends with those who love their country and their freedoms. I don’t mean this to be flippant, but a true friend that person was not.

The hardest thing I am having to deal with is people who profess to be “born-again” Bible believing Christians and see nothing wrong whatsoever in voting for Obama. Some are totally ignorant of what Obama believes and will do, but frankly most are them are not interested in knowing the facts and will get mad if you provide them with anything negative about their hero. Some are voting for him because they are Democrats or in a union and wouldn’t think of voting for a Republican in 10 lifetimes. Some are voting for him because they are black and Obama is black. Others because they follow Oprah and/or just think it is cool to vote for the Black guy. What bothers me so much is the disconnect between their professed faith and what Obama stands for.

It strikes me as strange. I mess with my liberal friends all the time and they mess with me, but I’ve never lost any friends over it. Did you guys have an especially angry argument?

I know my sis in law is way over the edge of left so we have kept politics out of conversation. She sent me some random article published in “Rolling Stone” about a conversation Mccain may have had 30 years ago blah blah blah.....I replied to her email not to her but to the author of the hit piece....wondering if the author is concerned about the Ayres connection, his church, and the dems role in the Wall Street....I got an email back blaming (R's) for the entire Wall Street mess.....I let it drop

What I do not understand her husband, my brother was a cop in Mpls during the time of the Ayres bombings....her two nephews my sons are Marines.... I don't think we will be in contact till after the election, I am not sure if I lost a family member or not.....

I don’t mind discussing politics with moderate Democrats, usually they vote for a Republican candidate every now and then. But with zealot Democrats, I don’t even discuss politics with them, I just nod my head and refuse to reveal my true political views.

Actually, it’s an interesting thread, and I think a lot of people are coming here to talk about things they probably can’t discuss with their ex-friends and family.

Everybody was new once upon a time, even you, and that certainly is no reason that they shouldn’t post.

Oh wait, they’re one and the same!

“Anyone else having similar experiences over the election?”

Good chance we’ll be estranged from my inlaws over this. It’ll be our choice. I don’t want to spend one nanosecond of time with someone who’ll be complicit in putting our country in jeopardy.

Passive aggression typically results from fear, insecurity, wanting to be “nice”, not wanting to cause waves or hurt other people’s feelings, etc. It also stems from a desire to have other people like you and accept you.

It really is unhealthy too.

I used to be like that but overcame it, thanks to God. It takes courage to be bluntly honest about where you stand on things. It takes a tremendous amount of courage when you first start but it gets much easier with time. It’s not easy, but honesty truly is the best policy. It’s also a huge weight off your shoulders once you learn how to stand up for yourself. It’s extremely liberating!

My heart goes out to you. Feel free to FReepmail me anytime ok?

Just today, I asked an old friend who she was "voting for"?

She said "I haven't made up my mind yet", which is code for Obama. She said he can't be worse than Bush.

I told her two things. The first was we are going to long for the days of Bush IF Obama gets elected.

Second, I told her if she voted for Obama she better not EVER tell me she did.

Just be careful.

There are many, many, new “FRiends” whose purpose is not to share common experiences with you, but to mess with your attitude and resolve.

“ask him what he truly wants out of life”

Reminds me of the interview Fox did with that Tito guy this morning. He’s from a third-world country, has worked his way up in a company from janitor or something to truck driver, and is totally in LOVE with America because of the opportunities. I love the video of Tito taking on CNN in defense of Joe The Plumber.
