TEHRAN (AFP) – Iran has opened a new naval base east of the Strait of Hormuz in a bid to boost its military control over the strategic Gulf waters, the country's navy chief was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

"With the opening of this naval base a new line of defence has been created east of the Strait of Hormuz," Admiral Habibollah Sayyari was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency.

"We can prevent the entry of any enemy naval units into the strategic Persian Gulf area if need be," he said, adding that the base was located in the port town of Jask on the Sea of Oman.

Sure you can, just keep on thinking that.

They are doing everything they can to boost oil prices, but it won’t work. The investment banks that loaned the money for margin buying are all gone!

Diego Garcia (B 52s)is not too far from there...nor is Whiteman AFB (B 2s) with air refueling.

I wonder whether this might be the genesis of SecDef Gates’ remarks about WMDs and neutralizing threats.

How long did it take the US to sink the entire Iran navy the first time?

If I recall it was only a matter of hours.

Well, good. That makes the Iranian navy that much easier to find. We won’t have to go so far out of our way. It’s like a convenience store for targets.

IF they can get some old Russian subs we will have to keep track of them. Not an easy task.

They can prevent the entry of at least one ship. Then the USN will make their new base disappear.

Unless Obama wins. Then the much feared US State department will unleash a withering barrage of vapid bull$hit, after getting permission from the UN and the Euroweenies. Then the even much more feared UN Security council, led by new US ambassador Jesse Jackson, will vote "present" and insist Admiral Habibollah Sayyari sit in the "time-out" chair.
