...with black eyes would indicate that bright swelling precedes the black tinge. As a junior high and high school wrestler, I’ve had a few in my lifetime. That sort of color didn’t set in before at leat two-three days.
She had just finished phone banking which imo is torture. No way would she phone bank and then be up for harming herself. Any Texas freepers know her?
Actually, a mirror-guided incision is much more difficult than a non-reversed freehand. The former will have hesitation marks which make the lines look as if made up of many slightly off-angle lines and has a jerky look to it. Also, reversed-vision corners are seldom neat or smooth.
This wound could have been made with a blade like a BP 12 http://www.bd.com/surgical/pdfs/surgical_blades_handles_and_disposable_scalpels.pdf
or a linoleum knife used to score the skin, but not cut it much, hence the lack of scab as pointed out by some astute posters. (On a weird note, the wound looks a lot like a cryo freeze burn, but this would require access to a medical liquid gas cryo system, and then someone would have to rough her up on the other side)
Her periorbital bruising seems real and consistent with stated mechanism of injury, as does her eyelid edema, both worse on the side opposite the wound. I would like to see some close-ups of the wound line to further help sort this out, but for now her story is the most plausible.
Even if this is a superficial wound, it is a horrible terrorizing of a young girl and an attempt to abrogate our essential freedoms. It is not coincidence that this mutilation was exactly where BO told his supporters to get: in their faces.

She had mris. We don’t know why there is discoloration under her eye. It wasn’t from wrestling however.
I don’t watch crime shows but they give lots of ideas to criminals who all have cable.

I see what you’re saying; looks too red and angry to be a scratch.However, she has a lot of red in her skin and her wheal reaction to tissue damage will be more prominent. This looks like skin deeply scored but not completely cut at the dermis in the time frame of 1-3 days post injury in a fair-skinned person.

Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story. Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from Ashley Todd, the victim in this case. The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and Ashley called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car. At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. Ashley went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.
Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me. He first met Ashley in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans. She works for them as a contract employee. She does not work for the McCain campaign. Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.
I’m not going to blame people for keeping a healthy skepticism on this case, but so far, the two media reports appear to check out.
If the B were put on from the top of her head facing down, would it look right? Yup.
It could have been put on with the woman’s head against the attackers shoes, and the attacker seeing her face upside down.
Don’t know if that’s the answer, though, there are a number of aspects of this that need some investigation.

It is my opinion that this is a Tawana Brawley moment. Here’s why:
1- As many have noted, the “B” is way too neat for somebody to have carved on anybody other than an unconscious patient.-- snip --
2- Although she has a “black eye”, there is NO swelling. All the anatomic landmarks are intact, there is fine wrinkling in the eyelid skin, etc. The “black eye” comes from blood vessels burst under the skin. There is no way the swelling would have resolved 24 hrs later. There was a similar case at Princeton last spring, a pro life student claimed to have been attacked by pro choicers. The injuries were self inflicted.
This is a major bummer as it will boomerang on Republicans and allow democrats to claim ALL abuse claims are bogus.-- snip --

Anonymous coward to cdga5for4I’m no expert on criminal investigations, just a plastic surgeon who treats facial trauma. I just don’t see evidence of trauma in the face other than a neatly carved or branded “B”. I can’t speak about the back of the head.
When you work in an ER, as I have, the first place an out of towner goes after an event like this, ESPECIALLY if alone when attacked, is the Emergency Room. They feel protected from the alien an hostile environment within the “safe” confines of a hospital. The police report, as a matter of fact, tends to be generated from within the hospital, after a call from social services.
Like I said, this just doesn’t add up.-- snip --
