Now we are 'rednecks'

On the heels of telling the Pittsburgh Tribune Review that racism would play into the vote in Western Pennsylvania for president next month, Rep. Jack Murtha told local Pittsburgh television station WTAE that it's difficult for many in the area to change, saying just five to 10 years ago the entire area was "redneck."

You have to wonder how residents of Pennsylvania like the descriptive phrases that have been piled on in the past few months. First, it was bitter and God and gun clinging, then it was racist, now they are rednecks.

In an interview with reporter David Brown at the Trib today, John McCain took exception to the “good people in Western Pennsylvania’ being framed as racists.

"I'm going to tell people in Western Pennsylvania that I don't believe they are racists, as Congressman Murtha alleges," said McCain, in the interview. He called the comment "disgraceful."

I think Murtha is trying to sabotage Obama in PA. I hope he is successful and also loses his seat.

Betcha didn’t know there’s still a few rednecks left in Marin and Sonoma Counties, CA. Very rare, can be observed in their threatened natural habitat; the shooting range.

I was born and raised just outside of Pittsburgh. I proudly call myself a redneck, a WPA bohunk, I say gum-band, y'uns, red-up, etc.

I wouldn't resent someone calling me a redneck, but I do take exception to him trying to use it as a slur. My only regret in my WPA upbringing is having been born north of the Mason-Dixon line. ;-)

I have a wife, two kids, a dog, an imported car (for the MPG) and a pickup truck (Chevy), I am active in my Church. I have a college degree - actually 3 if you count the two Masters degrees. "Firearm" is not a four letter word in my house, ditto "accountability" and "responsibility." So where do I fit into his stereotyping?
