Obama wrote that the wealth and stark racial divisions of Manhattan in the early 1980s had a profound effect on him.

“I stopped getting high. I ran 3 miles a day and fasted on Sundays. For the first time in years I applied myself to my studies and started keeping a journal of daily reflections and very bad poetry,” he wrote.

“You’re becoming a bore,” his friends told him.

He went to socialist conferences at Cooper Union and African cultural fairs in Brooklyn and started lecturing his relatives until they worried he’d become “one of those freaks you see on the streets around here.”

He wrestled with his racial identity, and one of the casualties was his year-long relationship with a wealthy white girlfriend. “I pushed her away,” he wrote.

After graduating, he took an analyst job at Business International Corp. to pay off his loans while looking for a grass-roots organizing job. He had an office and a secretary but it bothered him to be the only black executive, he wrote, so he quit.

Soon after, Obama lit out for a $13,000-a-year job as a community organizer in Chicago - where his destiny awaited.

Obama Endorses Bernie Sanders

Comment:

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened.”

Correction: Google groups. Same diff.

Uh, no.

They are not the same thing. This Google Groups posting comes from the Usenet archives (via Dejanews, likely). It's an actual 1996 posting to chi.politics.

So from all this we know:

In the 1990’2, Barack Obama was a member of the Chicago New Party [ http://www.chicagodsa.org/ngarchive/ng42.html#anchor792932 ], which is a socialist party [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Party_(USA) ].

From the mid 1996 to 2005, Barack Obama attended about half a dozen meetings of the Chicago Democratic Socialist of America [ http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=site%3Achicagodsa.org+obama+Town+Meeting&btnG=Search ], the largest socialist organization in the United States, and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International [ http://www.dsausa.org/about/index.html ], and draws upon Marxism, religious and ethical socialism to bring about fundamental restructuring of our socio-economic order [ http://www.chicagodsa.org/democraticsocialism.html ].

During meetings of the DSA, Barack Obama has promoted the Marxist concept of a social wage, income redistribution, and the allocation of wages and jobs using labor law reform, public works and contracts [ http://www.chicagodsa.org/ngarchive/ng45.html ].

Barack Obama was the chief sponsor [ http://www.chicagodsa.org/ngarchive/ng96.html#anchor495069 ] of an Illinois bill to set up state-wide universal healthcare [ http://www.chicagodsa.org/ngarchive/ng94.html#anchor349979 ].

In its latest newsletter, the DSA supported Obama’s candidacy, claiming that if Obama explained what his real plans are he would not be elected [ http://www.chicagodsa.org/ngarchive/ng120.html ].

Add that Obama had to sign a contract with the New Party

http://www.chicagodsa.org/ngarchive/ng42.html

And the praise the DSA gave Obama for his speech to the Young Socialists economic forum:

“When Obama participated in a 1996 UofC YDS Townhall Meeting on Economic Insecurity, much of what he had to say was well within the mainstream of European social democracy.“

http://www.chicagodsa.org/ngarchive/ng69.html

Also that the New Party was dominated by ACORN in Chicago

“But the nature of Chicago ACORN is secondary to the inevitable dynamics of the situation. As the single 800 pound gorilla in the Chicago New Party, it doesn’t leave a lot of room for newcomers to participate except on ACORN’s terms. This will make it difficult for the New Party to have a life apart from ACORN. The element that seems to be present in Milwaukee but absent in Chicago is organized labor.”

Thanks for making me take another look at it. Now I see what it is: an archive posting from 1996.

Thanks again.

LOL. Yes, the Obama campaign’s response to this story (as aired on Brit Hume’s show last night) was that “Obama ran as a Democrat in 1996 and don’t believe all the trash on the net.”

However, the New Party was a fusion party and ran their candidates mainly as Democrats.

Proof:

“Most of the local elections in which the New Party is running are non-partisan-so party registration doesn’t matter. In other races, we either run New Party members inside the major-party primary, or cross-endorse the best major-party candidate on our own ballot line.”

It’s a post on Usenet (which was a precursor to sites like Freerepublic), and while anyone can post, you can’t backdate it to 1996, when this was posted.
