Gingrich's four-point plan includes: (1) suspending immediately mark to market provisions (the accounting practice of valuing a financial position in an investment at its current market price) in the hopes of stopping the downward spiral in asset values and eventually replacing it with a three year rolling average; (2) repealing immediately Sarbanes-Oxley, the 2002 accounting law Gingrich described as "an enormous drag on small business"; (3) setting the capital gains tax rate at zero "matching the Chinese and Singapore" (to encourage private capital to flood into the market picking up properties without the taxpayers being at risk); and (4) passing an "extraordinarily powerful" energy bill ("to return $500 billion a year to the American economy that are currently going overseas").
I agree with you about Newt...
Newt is a grandstanding self promoter. He led the RNC to the brink of disaster with the Clinton impeachment, knowing all the time he had clay feet. When we most needed him, he resigned.
I would not trust this man to do anything right. He’s a self-promoting beltway kinda guy. He’s in love with his own cleverness. He has no loyalty to other Republicans, and proven by his statements today about Bush, which went all the way back to Katrina.
Apparently he agrees with Spike Lee and Kanye West that somehow a Cat 5 hurricane hitting a below sea level state was Bush’s fault.
Like so many politicians and ex politicians (Peggy Noonan, anyone?) I wish he would just go play golf. Gerald Ford should be there example.
UGH. Not no, HELL NO !! I would never ever ever vote for this man.
“Dude cmon. How many of these myopic Gingrich-for-Prez threads we have to endure? HE IS NOT PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL. He is a helluva advisor, policy wonk, strategist, operative etc. but NOT presidential material.”
Slick has the same qualities, and he was Prez.
I love Newt, but we’ve got McCain. sorry. Mac has a lot to admire, but is definately not a first choice (or 2nd, or 3rd...)
He would be a great Secretary of the Treasury. He explained the mark to market Sarbanes Orxley Act so that I could understand it for the first time in my life.
He told Greta that if Cox would temporarily suspend the mark to market in that bill that the market would correct itself amazingly and quickly.
**He said hell be speaking at the national press club tomorrow and talking about these issues.**
We’ll see if the lamestream ABCNNBCBS report on it.
Many press-conferences were held as Newt checked-off each portion of The Contract that came to a vote. Since you appear to have such a strong opinion on Newt, I'm surprised that you didn't know that.
Yes, but whatever happened? The GOP House never realized their full potential and squandered away what should have been a 40-year majority.
Clinton was impeached, as I recall (although not removed from office by the Senate), the republican candidate won the White House in 2000, with a majority in congress. To what brink of disaster are you referring?
Loved Newt when he was in the House, I would vote for him for president in a minute. Helluva lot better than McCain!!
Third that. Actually, How about stick Newt, Forbes, Laffer, and Romney all in a conference room and let them hammer it out. They'd fix it in about three hours, likely with minimal taxpayer risk.
Yes, Bush won in 2000 by a hair thin margin. The blowback from the impeachment included the formation of Move-On.org which has been a thorn in our sides ever sense.
The Republicans lost seats in the House in 2000, 2004 and 2006.
It is my opinion that Newt wasted the majority he had helped craft on a useless partisan obsession. We never did get the balanced budget, elimination of federal programs, frank discussion of affirmative action, or much else that motivated many of us to work like dogs in the 1990s to deliver the House to Republican control for the fist time in 40 years.
The impeachment is Newt’s monument to his own hubris. It ain’t much to look at, really, is it.
While I acknowledge that the republican party is a disaster, I can’t hang the losses in congress around Newt’s neck. I do feel that he left us all hanging after making some real waves. However, none of that makes his ideas on this financial mess invalid. I appreciate your thoughtful reply.
1. Agreed with Al Gore on global warming completely.
2. Was the driving force behind the new prescription drug entitlement.
3. Majorly responsible for squandering the Republican Revolution
4. Said he'd vote for the bailout
I haven't kept track of the rest of his goofy positions the last few years.
