Roy Blunt, negotiator for the House GOP, just told CNN that John McCain is "with" his caucus -- even though the Republican candidate hasn't publicly backed any plan yet.
Blunt, seen as a seasoned hand who will smooth differences between the camps, didn't say if the Arizona senator backed their market-based approach ["Certainly... he might be supportive"] -- but suggested McCain agreed the whole process needed to be slowed down.
"Everybody else seemed to be rushing for a deal and John McCain came back and said, 'Wait a minute, I think the House Republicans have the taxpayers in mind and I'm with them,'" Blunt, the minority whip said.

The last 90 days have seen one Dimwit stumble after another. I hope Obambi makes an idiot of himself tonight. McCain has really taken control of the presidential campaign in the last few days. It seems all the lefties can do is react. McCain clearly has the initiative at this point.

I hope this is correct. McCain needs to support the House Republicans who, it seems, have finally grown a spine. If he really wants to cement the “maverick” title, he ought to keep his promise from the convention, NAME names. This is an opportunity to call out Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid for their complicity in this crisis. Oh, and while he’s at it how about Frank Raines, Jamie Gerelick and the other DEMOCRATS that raided the coffers at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Lining their pockets by “cooking the books” This is going to be the LARGEST audience that McCain will have. It’s time to get on the Dems “6” and fire a heat seeker right up the chute.
LASTLY, TURN SARAH LOOSE!!! She may not be a polished “politician” that can parse words and recite policy crap from memory, but she is a plain speaking, children raising, gun toting, flag waving (have I forgotten anything?) female who can RELATE to the average American family. McCain must use the debate tonight as a bully pulpit to take his and the House GOP’s alternative plan directly to the people.
This is his opportunity to take charge as a leader and get the American people onboard a free-market solution that doesn’t rob the taxpayers for the benefit of Wall Street.
McCain needs to be bold and decisive tonight.

McCain might just be waiting to announce his “plan” at the debate tonight. I’d like to think his plan will be something along the lines of Gingrich’s plan which uses the market to fix the market via incentives.
If he just came out and said the Paulson plan was dead, the market would tailspin. If he announces his “plan” tonight after saying the Paulson plan is dead, then the markets should respond positively on Monday.
Then if the Rats push Bush/Paulson’s plan through they are siding against what the public wants and McCain is seen as “Mavericking” Bush and the insiders.
The rest of the campaign would be a slam dunk for him.
If the Rats concede to his plan then he gets credit for leadership and showing the nation a way out and ahead. He’s the winner again.
It wasn’t only Obama - whose spin sounded really good - but a couple of callers who were furious and scared and this morning’s poll numbers sent off the warning bells.

If they want to take the heat, they could pass it without a Republican vote in the House. So far, they do not.
That’s why McCain needs to use tonight’s debate to enlist the American people.

Senator McCain needs to recognize that he is now the leader of his party, and the leader of half of America. He can get a good bill done tonight by taking it to the people. He’s the leader of the Republican party, and they are represented by the Republicans in the House of Representatives. He must lead their charge.
Bush is no longer the GOP leader. It is time to cut him loose.
Let 0bama and Pelosi and Reid and Frank and Schumer have him.

McCain needs to suggest tonight that the debate focus on economic growth and the financial crisis.
I know I wasn’t dreaming, but can someone confirm this. Early this morning our local news said that Harry Reid (D-NV) had added a provision to the economic rescue bill that would prevent offshore drilling. Supposedly, Jim DeMint (R-SC) caught it. That’s part of the reason for the lack of agreement on this ridiculous bill.
Yes, the Democrats could pass the bill. And then brace themselves for nosntop ads about how they and Bush signed on to give $700 billion of the taxpayer's money to mortgage deadbeats and to Wall Street. The Pelosi-Reid-Paulson-Bush bill is supported in its agreed-upon form by 30% of voters.
If the Democrats adjourn without passing anything, we'll have bread lines before the election. Not a scenario to make even a Democrat Congressthing confident of reelection.
The House Republicans are in an excellent position, the best in two years!
