ABC News: Deal May Be Dead: Democrats Blaming McCain
ABC News ^ | September 25, 2008 | Jake Tapper, Charles Herman and Z. Byron Wolf

After days of intense bipartisan negotiations and meetings today at the White House, the deal to bail out staggered investment banks may be dying amid partisan finger-pointing.

Republicans blame Democrats. Democrats blame Republicans, and a key Democrat even pointed a finger at Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain.

House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank, D-Mass., told Democratic colleagues that McCain's sudden heightened involvement in the negotiations has destroyed chance of an agreement, sources told ABC's George Stephanopoulos.

Frank compared McCain's involvement to "Richard Nixon blowing up the Vietnam peace talks in 1968."

Look, The Rats have the experience in these bail out things..

The Rat Party (formerly the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party) has forced us to give annual 700-billion-dollar bail outs to oil producing countries for years.

If McCain can get a bill passed which starts to address the root causes of the crisis, rather than a bill which is intended to keep the Dow in lipstick and face powder for a few more months, he will go down in history as having achieved more as a candidate than most men do as President.

There’s several other threads on this, but for the record, Bush/Paulson did not propose covering bad mortgages (the taxpayers were already on the hook for those through fannie and freddy); they are proposing to take over mortgage backed securities. But that said, you are right—no money down mortgages that go belly up are, to the debtor, nothing more than de facto leases, so they really haven’t lost anything (especially given that the rental market went up at least as high as the mortgage market).

Great. I don’t care how this debacle dies as long as it dies.

Brit Hume said these dems don’t want to have to go back to their districts with it over their head that they voted to give away 750 billion dollars.

“...until John Rob plucked his magic twanger...”

I would be careful about using such phraseology in a thread with so many Barny Frank references.

Repeal the 17th Amendment, and you will have your wish. But that’s a thread for another day.

If what the economy suffers from is stage III melanoma, then a spritz of Bactine won't do any good. Only immediate surgery will help.

Actually, it's circulatory failure (no liquidity in the 'body') and the patient died last Wednesday before being revived for a few more days, weeks, or months.

Off course Frank and Dodd want a big bailout, they stand to rake loads of money in from it, thats why.

Who does this bailout benefit, congress’s personal campaign purses, thats who.

This punk has been elaborate and the Dems did not even see it coming.

Bush presents a plan, Dems love it, repubs hate it, McCain opposes it, McCain is now not tied to backing Bush, McCain seen as taking control, deal gets killed, Repubs put new deal forward, Bush says he’s willing to look now at all plans, Dems get furious at McCain, McCain can say he’s the real maverick bucking his own party President, Repubs anounce their plans, new deal gets found, clock gets run down, Dems panic and agree, Repubs and McCain take the credit , you just know, the Dems seem have been suckered bigtime.

I think this how it will play out. Its classic Rove.

Didn't they also leave open the possibility that they would take over notes backed by student loans and credit card balances - the "Seinfeld assets, backed by nothing"?

If they did rule this out please set me straight.

McCain just played his ace. Screw you Repubs.

I think the 'screw you Repubs may be a little off, it is Repubs who are blocking the pork filled giveaway almost alone. Who would have ever thought McCain would choose the Conservative path.

Yep. I went to DU and they hate the bailout idea, too. Being the person responsible for killing this plan is political gold. No one likes this plan, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, except for Wall Street fat cats.
