I think it was Rush’s show in 1998.
Hi AZ, Kathy.
I discovered FR quite by accident (is anything really by accident?) on my way to FOXNEWS.
It was in 2004, during the elections. After reading about FR in (ironically) a NEW YORK TIMES article, I bookmarked it out of curiosity, but sort of forgot about it. Then, several months later, I clicked it by mistake — intending FOXNEWS instead.
At the time Arafat had unofficially died, and I glanced at the posts about him. Then really started reading them. They were so funny, I couldn’t stop.
Since then I have become a fullblown addict. Literally. I get neurotic when I’m away from FR too long.
For me, FR has been a lifeline, especially coming 3 months after my father’s death & some unresolved grief. It really put me in a different place mentally.
It has also been humbling. I didn’t realize how naive & uninformed I was about the world. I really bow my head to a lot of the folks here.
My sister told me about Fr. It was a few months before the first G.W. Bush Election and my parents were for ALGORE! UGH!
The garbage that was being spewed at us was terrible.
WE needed a place to go for good information and I lurked for many years after that. (As you can see by my date.)
Free Republic has truly been a God sent place for me.
Having links for proof is the best thing along side all the smart people (Rathergate) Which has changed news for me.
Thanks Free Republic!
Saw a link on Drudge in 1998. Hit it, lurked for almost a year, then joined.
Thanks for tonites thread Connie!
Yeesh, what a day..
I just got home from work..
Anybody still awake?
I found FR sometime in 1998 (I lurked for a number of months before registering) from a Whitewater search that had lead me to Freeper Varmint Al’s website.
He didn't like it much, if I recall correctly.
Mr B actually showed me Free Republic in 2002.
I used to hang out on “The Daily Dose”.
Then one day Grammie invited me here, and you know the rest!
It’s all Grammies fault!
LOL
I saw a “Sore Loserman” sign somewhere (can’t remember—either Fox or WND) and signed up. It was during that tortuous Bush vs. Gore 2000 election.
A family member found FR while doing political research on candidates.
I started lurking a while later, and then finally signed up.
I found FR on the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth web page, discussion forum. I’ve been hooked ever since!
If I remember correctly, I linked from Lucianne.com. Can’t remember how long ago, but was a lurker for a long time before I ‘came out’ :-)
This is by far my favorite site.
I used to frequent (1999/2000) one of the Republican clubs on Yahoo—back when they had clubs . Someone posted a link to FR. When they got rid of the Yahoo clubs, I made FR my new hangout.
I was cleaning out a closet and found it behind old shoe boxes.
WELCOME TO
(where our troops, allies and their families can refresh themselves)
Good morning, Everyone. Good morning
Thank you, Connie, for preparing the Canteen for today's activities.
I have been waiting for this question. And, I have an answer! hehe
Now for our local DC Metroland weather report
~ Today.....Mostly cloudy and windy with showers developing this afternoon. High 63F. Winds NNE at 15 to 25 mph. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.
~ Tonight..... Rain showers along with windy conditions. Low 59F. Winds NNE at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 90%.
We are in for a windy day. However, we do need the rain.
To answer Connie's question: a very dear friend/former SIL (CelticLass) had discovered it somehow and told me to check it out. I lurked for a week or so until I finally found the Canteen because I wanted to show my support to the troops. And, the rest is history.
Now, I've got to make my rounds before I have to attack my work pile. I've got things to do for the end of the fiscal year and the beginning of the new one.
But, you stay right where you are. Don't touch that dial. Don't change that channel. Put down that remote. Don't leave the room. Keep your eyes on your monitor. Cause...............I'll be bock!
Now remember, the Canteen is ALWAYS
So, come on in and sit for a while. There's always plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness, and plain old BS
REMEMBER THEM ....

Howdy Connie.
I discovered FR back in ‘98 through a link from Drudge, believe it or not. :)
I used to read this Christian BBS, now defunct, and posters used to always talk about freepers. I had to ask what a freeper was. That lead to my discover of freerepublic.com.
I was reading an article on Tony Snow (class act) & it referenced FR & I’ve been hooked since.
When it was mentioned as “that place” by some of the nutjobs with an opposing view to mine on CNN’s Clinton Legal Battles Board and alt. current-events.clinton.whitewater.
