John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.
The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Fridays scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen, McCain said.
How does one take part in a debate in Mississippi when you're voting on the floor of the U.S. Senate in DC?
That's easy for a guy who was born in 1961 after the Selma march in 1964.....
Also look at the setup McCain has...
1) He is in the heart of the action, which is in Congress.
2) He can make speeches directly to the people without media moderators, and he will be assisted by he fellow senators.
3) Media outlets will have to cover it. And bring Obama back and he will be a sitting target not only for McCain, but also other U.S. Senators. Biden may have to come back too, leaving Palin to run the field all by her lonesome!
I was a little WTF at first, but this is a supremely brilliant move!
The Demoncrats will spin it as McCain is afraid to debate The One, The Great Obamessaiah!
Obama in TOTAL MELTDOWN MODE.
How sweet it is!!!!!!
On Drudge Report:
CNN: OBAMA SEES NO REASON TO SUSPEND...
The story isn’t there yet, just the headline.
Palin can still campaign. Her State has a 9 billion dollar budget surplus.
I don’t know, have some doubts about this move. Why not hold the debate anyways, but make it 100% about the economical crisis at hand? Let’s push Obama into putting in plain words what he would do to fix this right now. No quibbles, not shimmying behind vague, futuristic proposals. Sit down, face-to-face and nail him.
A good move by McCain to postpone his campaign, but pushing bad legislation is not what’s needed. Calm leadership is needed by President Bush, the White House economic team, and congressional leadership. I suggest short term interim steps to stop the bleeding, followed by thoughtful legislation to shore up our financial infrastructure.
“Obama is studying the answers to the wrong test.....Obama will cry foul now that he won’t have the correct answers before the debate. “
obama already has the questions for the debate.
I like this move, it does say country first IMO
I don’t want this P.O.S to pass...
But I think it was a brilliant move on McCain’s part...
RE: “I think if you take a poll..which they will..the people will say for Obama and Biden to get their sorry butts back to hot DC and face the music.”
Agree — if any pollster asked my opinion about campaigners going back to the Senate to do their current jobs, going back immediately would be exactly what I would highly recommend!!!
I love it when you talk "rough", TOL....
Throw the election by going to Washington to do his job and help our country? The question is whether Obama throws the election by not following suit.
Looks like we are on the same wavelength, tol.
Because that would not be "suspending his campaign to focus on the economic crisis." To engage in the debate would be to lose the import of this move.
Moreover, McCain is in a very, very strong position here. He will be a lightning rod for the Democrats, which will give his position on the crisis a great deal more weight than it would otherwise have done. He has an opportunity here to "Be Presidential" in the context of a real crisis.
And... he will be able to remind everybody of his old and rejected Fannie Mae legislation.
The more I think about this, the better it becomes. McCain will be "campaigning" very effectively simply by showing up in the Senate and making his position known. And if he also makes sense (which I think he will), Obama will be pushed aside for days or weeks.
This is brilliant!
And there you have it. McCain is a leader, Obama is a campaigner.
“Did he just throw the election?”
No.
This is great strategery.
McCain can demonstrate his bipartisan bona fides.
If Obama and Biden come back to DC, fine — the issue is essentially neutralized.
But if Obama and Biden refuse to come back — while both are drawing a taxpayer salary — it provides significant ammunition for attack ads.
Amen to that...
