[history]
John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.
The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Fridays scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen, McCain said.

This was a huge mistake for him. He should fire the guy who came up with this lame gimmic. Thanks, Jack. And welcome to FR.

Hey Dummie, go back to where you belong - seriously - your history of posts for the last 2-3 weeks tells me who you are.

Obama can just as easily say that "we can handle both --- we have the executive ability to fight on two fronts.". It would be nonsense but they could make it sound reasonable. It isn't a question of being able to do two things at once. It is a question of focusing your full attention and energy on avoiding a devastating economic disaster before it is too late -- and time may be running out. The difference is huge.

Wow, this thread is going fast. The version I read from an AP wire release was that the Obama campaign called McCain early in the morning to propose they issue a joint statement. Now I just heard a sound bite that Obama is criticizing McCain for not going ahead with the debate. I guess it was McCain who first proposed suspending the debate.
But they both appear to want some bailout package.

Obama thinks himself the President now. Obama is trying to
act presidential and coming across as pompous.

Ha ha - Palin on PPV!
Would it do McCain any good to agree to an abbreviated Fri debate with an appearance via satellite from DC? Obama would look like a fool in Oxford while the Senate grown-ups are working, so I guess that wouldn’t be agreed to...
Too bad for the folks in MS, tho.

Well the Republican Convention didn’t have to be put back a day, did it? After all the Hurricane was in the Gulf, not Minnesota.
How about PRIORITIES, how about it’s not about doing two things at once its about devoting ALL your attention to a serious crisis.

With an aggressively hostile opponent who had been one of Abe's generals at one time.
That would be a huge talking point for Obama's people - during the most important (and tragic) event in this nation's history, Lincoln could campaign and debate against an openly hostile Democrat who was also one of his generals (and General McClellan didn't resign his commission until the day before the election I believe).
Meanwhile John McCain can't campaign because a few companies made some bad decisions (but he can still make time to speak at the Clintons' event tomorrow).

He just conceded the election to Obama.I believe he would concede to save his country. "Country First" is McCain's way of life.
Obama has better things to do than help save his country. Obama is letting others do the heavy lifting but will be there to take any credit after the hard work is done.

Could some of our fine graphic artist FReepers possibly come up with some banners, desktop wallpaper, logos, etc., based on what I think might be THE gaffe of the entire campaign?
"IF YOU NEED ME...CALL ME."
This is better than "I voted FOR the 87 billion dollars before I voted against it"!

I don’t know. I almost never watch CNN, but showboating and goldbricking have been commonly used where I live for years.

I personally dont see the benefit of calling additional attention to this financial situation, and I dont think McCain should be trying to rush it along.Want to give us some evidence that you have the remotest clue about what is going on that allows you to have that opinion. Educate us.

Reading some of these posts I guess it's all over! I guess it is ok for folks like me who always pays my bills, always on time just to stop paying because we are heading for a crash anyway. Also, I should not support a man who wants to roll up his sleeves and try to get a solution, but rather concede to a socialist scumbag.

McCain is just giving up??
I don't care how noble this looks, if this is real, he lost the election.
Foreign policy is supposed to be his strength and now he wimped out, so it looks like he is scared of Obama and weak? Were his internals that bad that he no longer wants to try to win this election?
