Pet pit bulls maul NLV 4-month-old to death
Grandmother baby-sitting child hospitalized
By LAWRENCE MOWER REVIEW-JOURNAL
A 4-month-old girl was fatally mauled by her family's two pit bulls Friday at their North Las Vegas home.
The baby's grandmother, who was watching the baby while her parents were at work, was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries sustained as she tried to protect her granddaughter. North Las Vegas police Chief Joseph Forti said the dogs were in the backyard of the home, near Cheyenne Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard, prior to the attack.
The dogs managed to enter the home, possibly by bursting through a screen door, and began attacking the baby as she lay in a stroller, he said.
"They just went right for the little girl," he said.
The grandmother took the baby and tried to escape into a room of the house.
She tried to close the door behind her, but one of the dogs forced its way into the room, Forti said, followed by the other.
They began attacking the girl again, and the grandmother called police at about 11:25 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found the two dogs with blood on their fur "acting very aggressively" toward the officers, according to a statement issued by the department. Police shot and killed the dogs.
Officers found the baby lying on the floor of a bedroom, dead from her injuries.
"This is about as severe an attack as I've seen in my 18 years in North Las Vegas," North Las Vegas Animal Control officer Dale Smock said.
Forti said he was told by officers the girl had suffered "very severe bite and head wounds."
The attack was so severe that officers and medical personnel who responded to the incident are being offered counseling, Forti and North Las Vegas Fire Department Capt. Cedric Williams said.
"This is something they don't see every day," Williams said.
The names of the baby and the grandmother were not released by police.
According to neighbors, the parents of the baby were new to the typical valley neighborhood of stucco houses and neat yards, having just moved into the home on Eagle View Way in recent months. One neighbor said he had seen the dogs loose in the neighborhood at least once.
Neighbor Jason Howe was furious.
"You don't have pit bulls around children, period," he said.
"The whole situation's sad," said 75-year-old neighbor Stan Heaton.
In June, a 2-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after a neighbor's boxer bit him on his face and neck in the northwest valley.
And in April, two children, ages 4 and 5, were hospitalized after being attacked by a neighbor's boxer and a pit bull near Vegas Valley and McLeod drives.
North Las Vegas has investigated 192 dog attacks since the beginning of last year, including 73 attacks from pit bulls, Smock said.
One of those attacks was on one of the city's animal control officers, who was investigating a complaint on July 3.
After walking into a backyard, she was attacked by two pit bulls and has yet to return to full-time duty at the department, Smock said.
Smock said pit bull attacks cause deep wounds that are "sometimes compared to shark attacks."
Forti said he didn't know whether charges would be pressed against the family, a decision left up to the district attorney's office.
I’m a cat person and until recently, I hadn’t thought too much about pit bulls except to think that they were highly dangerous. About two weeks ago there was a special, I think that it was on TLC, about the rehabilitation of the Michael Vick dogs. It really moved me and changed my overall opinion of the breed. I’m still wary but, as you said, they are obviously not all bad. BTW, thanks for posting such a sweet picture.
“Pit bulls, while dangerous,”

“But dont try to take him away from me using the government as your big brother. Its cowardly and misguided.”

Your Strawman Is On Fire!!!
Nowhere In My Post Did I Say GUBMINT Now Did I ???
You Have Said In Your Own Post That They Are “DANGEROUS”,,,
I Ain’t Got No Big Brother,,,
I Don’t Need No Gubmint To Protect Me And Mine,,,(COLT),,,
And I DAMNED Well Ain’t No Coward!!!
And let us get this perfectly clear.
PIT BULLS have a better temperament than Border Collies, and Dachshunds. Pits can handle pain more than any other dog. As for “fighting Pits” Micheal Vick had 68 dogs, only 2 were put down. 26 are at Dogtown the others have been adopted out. 1 is a hospital therapy dog. And this after they have been used to kill.
The dog “Petey” on The Little Rascels was a Pit.
They do not attack children. Chihuahuas bite more people than Pits. They ARE great loving dogs they fight not because they are bred to do so but because they were bred to please their masters. They were originally hunting dogs. They were used as fighting dogs.
If 66 out of 68 can be rehabilitated it is NOT THE BREED, it IS THE OWNERS.
I have NEVER BEEN bitten by a Pit even a stray, even one yesterday, who was found with cigarette burns on top of his ears, he is a sweet dog even after some A$$hole abused him. Once he heals he will be adopted out, His name is Cheerio, and I can touch the wound on top of his ears and his tail never stops wagging.
Alot of the fighting dogs are fed steroids mixed with their food (making them aggressive) they are abused, they are starved, they are beaten.
I foster dogs, and I own an American Bulldog, all bully breeds are blamed for attacks, yet they are not the ones who start the fights. It seems people would rather believe the myths than the truth.
Them pits are nice dogs unless some owner makes them rotten. That is just the fact.
If I hear that one more time, I think I will scream.

Between the news stories about people being mauled by pit bulls (mostly children) are propaganda pieces by and for pit bull owners. That tells us all that we need to know about them.
I’ve owned three. They were without a doubt the most friendly, loving pets you could imagine.
But, believe me, I was ready to take them all out at the slightest hint of aggression. And, when I had kids, what kind of dog did we get? A Golden Retriever.
Better safe than sorry.

First off, dogs are often misidentified. I have seen a lot of mixed breeds called Pits. German Shepards (GS) are more aggressive. The difference is a GS will not always warn you it is about to attack a Pit will.
Pits were used in the majority of circus and Vaudville acts years ago. As I said they want to please their masters.
Dog Bite Law Center, lawyers not dog experts. The Dog whisperer Ceasar Milan uses a Pit to train other dogs. Daddy, he was a stray, the most balanced dog you will see on TV. I trust Milan’s judgement on Pits more than the MSM or lawyers.
I trust my own interaction more than hit pieces on Pits. The BIG difference in Pits is that they have the ability to lock their jaws. And as for the Dog Bite Law Center, they do not get into how many dogs had rabies. etc....
We used to think Great Whites hunted people yet there are divers who swim with them, grab onto their fins for a ride, etc...
The Grizzly Man lived with Grizzly’s never had a problem until once, but that one instance was fatal.
There is another Grizzly Guy in Canada that has been living with them for over 40 years, never been attacked.
You can search Google and find that caged or wild deer kill more people than Alligators or bears, or dogs for that matter, they will gore you with their antlers, or jump and hit you with their hooves, the deer ususally die also they simply have a heart attack from the stress.
Believe what you want, free country, but fear of the unknown or fear that has been fed to you only lessens your knowledge of the world.
I have been kicked by horses, thrown, bitten, yet I still ride. A dog, or a horse can sense fear. You are then less powerful to them.
No fear, and the dog does not attack.
“Them pits are nice dogs unless some owner makes them rotten. That is just the fact.”
ya right. I’ve had pit bulls - all were stone cold killers. I loved them to death but they are a one person dog and don’t play nice around children or other animals. Their whole purpose was to kill other dogs back when dog fighting was a gentleman’s sport (1880’s-1940’s) and they have not breed the gameness out of them since.
One time me and my wife were invited to her friends house for dinner. The dining room has a large patio window door. Imagine our shock while at the dinner table when one of their pit bulls lunged at the patio window with a loud thud and barking. We were scared to death! Her husband said "relax, he won't come through it, he stays in the yard.". Next time we came over, there was plywood in place of the patio window. He grinned "yeah, he crashed through it.". We weren't amused.
“The BIG difference in Pits is that they have the ability to lock their jaws”
No they don’t/ their mandible structure is just like any other dog just much more muscular and with a shorter snout providing bite power unlike any other canine. Google it there are plenty of vets who say their jaws don’t lock. All you have to do to get them to release their death grip is get a breaking stick and pry their mouth open.
Update fer yew!:
Just took my 16yo springer “out” and All Five of them
DAMNED DAWGS Charged The Fence!!!
Razin’ HELL!!!
Strainin’ At The Chains!!!
Ain’t They Fine PETS To Have Next Door???...DUH!...
“PIT BULLS have a better temperament than Border Collies, and Dachshunds. Pits can handle pain more than any other dog.”
I agree with that and pretty much everything else you said but you’re forgetting WHEN Pit Bulls do loose their temperament it’s death or best case amputation for their victim. This makes them a very very dangerous animal and should be licensed like lions are.
German Shepards have more than 1000 Lbs of bite pressure, more than a pit. Germans also attack by their size, weight and momentum. They lunge and use this force, and you can watch them twist their bodies to bring down their intended victim.
Bull Mastifs have more bite pressure.
Rotties have more bite pressure, and tear like a shark, Chows have more bite pressure.
Pits are blamed in attacks when the dog is not a pit, a mixed breed is identified as a pit more often then not.
A lab will go through a plate glass window to protect the family. A Doby or Shepard turns on its owner, there have been a few deaths by dachsunds.
Any dog can attack, most little dogs will bite, should we put them down?
Horses bite, should they be shot?
Blame the people, dogs bite when not controlled, or abused. More often it is abuse by the people they bite.
1000lbs LOL Yeah right. I’d like to see that study or source that’s more than a great white shark. Anyway if you think a shepard is any threat to a pit bull you are a fool. I’ve seen muzzled pits beat Shepard’s. their speed and gameness is unparalleled.
I didnt say they should all be put down. I got rid of mine when I stared to have a family and moved out of country my choice but they should be licensed like lions and other exotics are.
Every town with a lethal pit bull population has a MLK Boulevard.
If those were my dogs, they would be hanging by the neck from a tree in the back yard as buzzard feed.
