The eyewall of Hurricane Ike crossed Galveston Island in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports indicate as many as 20,000 residents of Galveston Island chose not to evacuate as storm surge engulfed the island. The Freeport Chief of Police reported as many as 2000 residents did not evacuate as flood waters swamped coastal communities. There are widespread reports of power outages and coastal flooding throughout the Texas/Louisiana region. The U.S. Coast Guard received hundreds of calls Friday afternoon to rescue people stranded by flood waters along the barrier islands and Galveston Bay communities.
Multiple fires broke out in the Greater Houston area fueled by strong winds. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by flood waters. Brennan's Restaurant, a landmark in Houston, burned to the ground. A 584-foot freighter crippled in the Gulf of Mexico and its crew of 22 survived the storm after The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to abort rescue efforts Friday afternoon due to foul weather
Gulf Coast wholesale gasoline prices jumped to nearly $5 a gallon over fears that water and wind damage could keep the facilities closed for days or longer. Oil companies had shut down 97.5 percent of production in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning and were battening down refineries and petrochemical plants in an area that accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity.
Exxon Mobil reported evacuating workers from its Gulf Coast offshore platforms and onshore facilities in the anticipated path of Ike, shutting down daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil and 270 million cubic feet of gas..

I’ve got that book over here and was gonna pull it out and re-read it but I’m too glued to the T.V. updates. I pray this is nothing like the account in that book! Have you heard anything from your friends? It really sucks watching a city you adore getting shredded by Mother Nature, especially when you’re halfway around the world! I pray everything turns out okay...
A big part of the problem is NIMBY idiots. That is not congress - that is local. Teddy boy is one of those - no wind turbines to spoil his view.
get butts out... sorry yall long night and freeping from my cell phone...
stumbling around getting coffee started...been watching the tv off and on all night..sending lots of prayers to our friends across the gulf from Florida.
I wonder if those fires are the ones DrewsMum’s dad said they had put out?
President Bush coming up shortly to discuss Ike.
Looks to me like that democrat woman mayor in Galveston is going to have alot to answer for as well. She did not order an evacuation until Thursday at 5:00 pm and only then, for the western side of island.
She is going to have the blood of ‘her people’ on her hands...although if you have to have a politician tell you when to leave, you are a hopeless fool regardless...(eye roll)
I agree! No argument from me!
Just checking in on you. Hope all is OK!
Did the mayor evacuate or did she stay on the island?
he wasn’t specific about which refinery...i am not sure he knows.
anyone have more information on time of presidents speech & maybe a live stream link
I got hold of Balde a short while ago. His place is taking in a lot of water. He thinks a tree hit the upstairs and water is coming in through his walls and his back window. He’s very stressed right now.
she was in the same hotel as the news people
Jacksonville FL
yesterday and this a.m. several gas stations have put yellow “out of service” bags on the ‘regular’ gas pumps- yeah right!
prices up .20 overnight
yet oil was below $100 barrel yesterday
It is light out but still windy and rainy.
I can’t see any damage around me in Cypress. I don’t see any trees down and looks like the fences made it.
It was pretty hairy the past couple of hours. Heard a guy on the radio say he had just driven 290 and no power from Field Store road all the way in.
Ouch.
She stayed in the San Loius hotel(safest on the Island).....yet sent the people to some shoddy shelter at a high school as a shelter of last resort..(eye roll). Hope they made it!!
BS. I lived in Oklahoma until 6 years ago. It is the US congress, and the US congress ALONE that has blocked new refineries there.
yes, such a shame that probably many who stayed have young children who had no say about evacuating, I pray death toll is small.
They aren't focusing on Ike. They are Palin bashing. So if you want news on Ike don't go there. They just had some feminazi on who said that women won't support Palin because she DOESN'T represent the values of women and that the Marxist does. Thanks for the vanity NautiNurse. Hope you can get some sleep soon.
