Hurricane Ike Live Thread IV
NOAA/NHC ^ | 14 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 11:29:13 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The eyewall of Hurricane Ike crossed Galveston Island in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports indicate as many as 20,000 residents of Galveston Island chose not to evacuate as storm surge engulfed the island. The Freeport Chief of Police reported as many as 2000 residents did not evacuate as flood waters swamped coastal communities. There are widespread reports of power outages and coastal flooding throughout the Texas/Louisiana region. The U.S. Coast Guard received hundreds of calls Friday afternoon to rescue people stranded by flood waters along the barrier islands and Galveston Bay communities.

Multiple fires broke out in the Greater Houston area fueled by strong winds. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by flood waters. Brennan's Restaurant, a landmark in Houston, burned to the ground. A 584-foot freighter crippled in the Gulf of Mexico and its crew of 22 survived the storm after The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to abort rescue efforts Friday afternoon due to foul weather

Gulf Coast wholesale gasoline prices jumped to nearly $5 a gallon over fears that water and wind damage could keep the facilities closed for days or longer. Oil companies had shut down 97.5 percent of production in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning and were battening down refineries and petrochemical plants in an area that accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity.

Exxon Mobil reported evacuating workers from its Gulf Coast offshore platforms and onshore facilities in the anticipated path of Ike, shutting down daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil and 270 million cubic feet of gas..

Ok, I will not be a party to your shenanigans. ;0)

I go back to teaching high schoolers next week and they bring all the drama I can handle. Although I have come to realize that boys DO NOT EVER grow up. EVER. On the way to school, I can have the same EXACT conversation with my 8 year old boy as I do with 18 year old boys at school. EXACT. Girls’ interests change from Barbie at age 4 to lip gloss at 11 to boys at age 13. Boys’ interests hover around bad smells, video games, and practical jokes from age 4 to eternity...It’s life and I’ve come to accept it, so have your fun. ;0)

Me too, ferverntly, me too.

I am going to see if I can get ahold of my Uncle Pat, in Pasadena tomorrow. He’s still currently without power, but he is elderly and I am worried about him.

Loved your story about the school band back to practicing.

Good info about the mortgage deferral in a tight situation. Hopefully, they won't sock you too hard with late fee penalty.

Tip: Keep an eye out for your electric bill. With electricity out for several days, you power bill should be less than usual. Unfortunately, all too often following a storm, the electric company cannot/does not read meters for a month or two. As a result, you electric bill will be based on prior months (e.g. peak load for July/August), and your electric bill may well be a whole lot higher than it should be. If this happens, call the company with your actual meter reading in hand. They will probably try to talk you into waiting a month or two to make adjustments. Be persistent, and they will make the adjustment.

That’s so typical. My grandson gets up in the morning asking if Taco Bell is open yet.

Kids, can’t live with ‘em, can’t throw ‘em under a bus :-)

I spent some time today lookin’ around on Google Earth/

pics from some links here/etc. ,,,

Much has changed since I was there last,,,

Much of it is hard to look at,,,

Seems to be a very large amount of wreckage unaccounted for.

Gone,,,

That road on the Bolivar Pen. is only about 3-6’ ASL,,,

I would think some of the lumber would have washed back

from the N? and be stacked up against what was left when

the water went down,,,bare sand in most places,,,

Fox just reported that the search crews are now leaving

Galveston,,,local gubmint now worried about bodies washing

up on shore,,,hotline being set-up for folks to check-in

and to report people missing...

God Bless you in such a worthwhile cause. FTR...my thoughts were not that she somehow ‘caused’ the devastation, but that when asked about it, her first thought(like most liberal politicians)was the loss of ‘her tax base’.

FRegards.

It also helps if you preface the conversation with ‘I spoke with the Public Utilities Commission today (my Aunt works there)’ ...the conversation/negotiation tends to go your way after that.

Many utilities have rat AMR - automatic meter reading, the meter ‘pings’ your elec company with the reading every month.

Somebody was asking how they knew how many residents didn’t evacuate..... elec company can judge pull from homes and extrapolate how many left and turned everything off vs. how many were pulling normal juice when Ike hit.

If they ping your AMR meter for current pull, which should be zero but is not, they can infer you haven’t evacuated.

Fox just reported all that?
Are they leaving Galveston and going East to Crystal Beach, Bolivar, Gilchrist? Or just getting out of town altogether?

Me too.

Whooo, the dog is eating. She finally came out of the bedroom. I tell you the trauma isnt just for humans.

Poor thing has been in a tizzy. We have not had a repeat of the seizure incident though, so I am glad about that. I figure we may have one accident or two, before she is used to the new fence.

She hates change. She’s not voting for Obambi.

:-)

A lot of debris from Bolivar is washed up along the coast east of Smith Point. The debris field is rather large, and remarkably far inland. There is at least one report of a survivor who landed in the general area after starting out on Bolivar. Click on the photo for a larger animated transition graphic.
