The eyewall of Hurricane Ike crossed Galveston Island in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports indicate as many as 20,000 residents of Galveston Island chose not to evacuate as storm surge engulfed the island. The Freeport Chief of Police reported as many as 2000 residents did not evacuate as flood waters swamped coastal communities. There are widespread reports of power outages and coastal flooding throughout the Texas/Louisiana region. The U.S. Coast Guard received hundreds of calls Friday afternoon to rescue people stranded by flood waters along the barrier islands and Galveston Bay communities.
Multiple fires broke out in the Greater Houston area fueled by strong winds. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by flood waters. Brennan's Restaurant, a landmark in Houston, burned to the ground. A 584-foot freighter crippled in the Gulf of Mexico and its crew of 22 survived the storm after The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to abort rescue efforts Friday afternoon due to foul weather
Gulf Coast wholesale gasoline prices jumped to nearly $5 a gallon over fears that water and wind damage could keep the facilities closed for days or longer. Oil companies had shut down 97.5 percent of production in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning and were battening down refineries and petrochemical plants in an area that accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity.
Exxon Mobil reported evacuating workers from its Gulf Coast offshore platforms and onshore facilities in the anticipated path of Ike, shutting down daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil and 270 million cubic feet of gas..

Everybody tried to talk jpsb into evac, nobody got through.
I'm going to take a few minutes to read this thread and then hit the hay. Sleeping on the floor at the business is just like staying at a Holiday Inn Express!
Thanks again!
Good advice. I have minimal scripts permitted for that site.
Sounds like he’s in a good higher area and
in a good strong home ..
We’re lookin’ for ya, jpsb. Check in when
you can. We’ve got prayers going strong.

jpsb to NautiNurse
“This storm is no stronger Alicia in 83, San Leon will be OK. Just about everyone here is staying. My neighbor has a concrete/stone three story house. I will be fine I am on the high side of San Leon (12), I worry about the folks staying on the low side (4)of San Leon.”

where was jpsb staying?
{{{hugs}}}
San Leon.
Many were not at water’s edge before Friday night !
Don’t know about Bolivar but in many parts of west Galveston there were dunes ahead of the stilt houses.
GMTA .... ;)
San Leon devasted by Ike, note lack of leaves on trees.
Hang in there ... may the waters
have receded by morning. Stay safe.
Ooh .. they were .. didn’t know that.
Thanks for that info. I’ve seen so
many at water’s edge, I thought it
was allowed.
You should have seen all the leaves in my yard and driveway. I described it to my family...a carpet of leaves on my driveway.
The thing I noticed about the leaves is that they were mulched. A lawn mower doesn’t even do that good a job. On the windows that were boarded up, there were leaf pieces parts on the glass.
Thank you for checking in. I am sure you have been busting your butt all day trying to keep that flood water out.
Make sure if you have to walk through any of the water that you get a series preventive hep shots and tetanus.
I went through this crap in 1993 (chest high flood water) trying to save stuff that was up high in a business of a friend. I had to go get the hep shots and tetanus shots to make sure I did not catch anything after wading in 1993 flood waters.
Oh no...
Agonizing decimation in those photos.
Now, I'm no weather genius, not a psychic, not a prophet. Maybe just a lucky guess. I posted the pic on here on the 9th. I would really like to be wrong on the little red X. I have nothing invested in being right and would gladly be a fool. This is one case where I'd love to be a complete idiot and a laughingstock.
You need to clear out if you can. Just as I saw the track in my pea brain, I got the idea there would be 500-600 fatalities. Boy, I really hope everyone looks back at this post in a few days and says, "What an idiot, Renko. No fatalities at all! Not even a dog." I'll relish being the idiot again. It would be delicious to be wrong.
So, let me be the idiot for anyone on the fence thinking of leaving. Let me nudge you into your car and out the driveway. If in two days it was all hype and Ike is a bust, come back here and make fun of me. I'll provide a picture of me you that you can put lipstick on! At least you'll be alive and I won't have any regrets.
This is a big storm pushing a bunch of water. Water weighs around 8 pounds per gallon. The surge will crush a house - doesn't matter if it is one story or two. Get away from Galveston and low lying areas and come back in a few days and make fun of Arkady Renko. I'll love it.
May God bless and give everyone in the path wisdom.
