The eyewall of Hurricane Ike crossed Galveston Island in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports indicate as many as 20,000 residents of Galveston Island chose not to evacuate as storm surge engulfed the island. The Freeport Chief of Police reported as many as 2000 residents did not evacuate as flood waters swamped coastal communities. There are widespread reports of power outages and coastal flooding throughout the Texas/Louisiana region. The U.S. Coast Guard received hundreds of calls Friday afternoon to rescue people stranded by flood waters along the barrier islands and Galveston Bay communities.
Multiple fires broke out in the Greater Houston area fueled by strong winds. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by flood waters. Brennan's Restaurant, a landmark in Houston, burned to the ground. A 584-foot freighter crippled in the Gulf of Mexico and its crew of 22 survived the storm after The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to abort rescue efforts Friday afternoon due to foul weather
Gulf Coast wholesale gasoline prices jumped to nearly $5 a gallon over fears that water and wind damage could keep the facilities closed for days or longer. Oil companies had shut down 97.5 percent of production in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning and were battening down refineries and petrochemical plants in an area that accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity.
Exxon Mobil reported evacuating workers from its Gulf Coast offshore platforms and onshore facilities in the anticipated path of Ike, shutting down daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil and 270 million cubic feet of gas..

This is from an email I received from my niece who lives (lived?) in Galveston, sad but grateful news. They’re tough kids, they’ll be ok!

Hello friends and family,
Some of you have heard the latest from mom; we did hear from our neighbor Angela again this morning, she is staying with another neighbor that has an intact house. My connection with her was very bad during our last conversation, and I didn’t get all of the details. She did stay in our house, in our upstairs bedroom, during the storm. We did lose our backyard pecan, which lifted up the rear of the house with such force it sent the refrigerator flying. Soon after we lost our front, massive sycamore. It’s rootball lifted the front of our house, tore off the front porch and we lost the front door. Angela says the door jams popped and the house is so off level none of the interior doors will close. It sounds like a total loss and I would be surprised if the house is structurally sound enough to enter and collect whatever is left.

We are so, so grateful our house kept Angela safe, it is not a small miracle both of those giant trees, fell away from the house.

Culberson is a bozo. don’t first responders know to have a few days supply of food and water just like the rest of us? why do they need food 24 hours after the fact?

2,000,000 people without power for days/weeks is a big event, and I don’t see it anywhere in the Dinosaur (TV) media.
pax_et_bonum reports at post 1941, that both the Eakers and Humblegunner (John) are OK. No power at Eakers, Humble lost his "barn".But Malcolm returned after having gone walkabout earlier in the week.
I imagine that means the midget is now blown away to somewhere in Northeast Texas, or Southwest Arkansas.

I had been trying to get on FR for a while I guess it wasn’t my computer or dial-up that was the problem. I just wanted to repeat that I heard from daughter-in-law today. She is having to share the phone charger with someone else. They have a generater but they have to be careful to conserve their fuel. She has not been able to get to her house to see if she has anything left, the road to her home is still flooded. Thanks for your help and concern.

Squirrels ain't vermin, they's food. Also something for the dogs to chase but rarely catch (our old dog got three though, she outsmarted 'em).
No conflict at all between hunting and preserving them. Besides, the report I read says these were young 'ens, knocked out of their nests by the storm, and separated from Mama Squirrel.
Also not quite sure what you mean by "park animals". They're everywhere there are trees with nuts or cones.
Wife was very concerned during out last hurricane when the squirrel’s nest blew out of the tree. They all survived just fine...except for the ones that got in my pecan tree.

I have 16 Houston families, including my own, here as our guests in Key Biscayne-Miami that left before Ike hit. Looks like it is going to be weeks before power is restored. My brother and I are looking at the videos and photos of the incredible damage to property on Bolivar Peninsula, which is east of Galveston. It’s right up there with the damage to the Mississippi coastal property from Katrina. Further, we don’t believe the reports that damage was minimal to the Port Arthur refineries. That area took a massive hit and record storm surge. Valero owns 3 of them and their gas stations prices have already gone up 45-55 cents per gallon. Have to say hats off to Geraldo Rivera’s live coverage when all hell broke loose around 12:15-30 a.m. when the full force of Ike came on-shore in Galveston. We know Galveston like the back of our hands, and there’s no question the storm surge was a solid 16 -17 ft in front of the San Luis Hotel where Geraldo and many other reporters were. Also, none of us have ever seen the level of hurricane damage sustained by Galveston Island from Ike, other than photos of the Great 1900 Hurricane.
Hope everyone effected by the hurricane is hanging in there. It’s going to take a long time for Southeast Texas to recover.

If you refer to my double-post 2389/2390 and earlier posts you will find that I’m well aware of the catastrophic electricity failure due to Ike... it was only gas/oil I believe will not be affected that much. And by the way, I believe you were wrong when you say 2Million people... it is 2,000,000 CUSTOMERS... far more than 2M people.
I could be wrong. Sue me again if so.
Now, I’ve got to go rescue some squirrels. 35mph winds here now... poor critters.

Here’s something that should blow your minds even more.
Sometimes we rescue rattlesnakes in natural disasters.
Even weirder - often the rattlesnakes do not attack while being rescued.
Why do we do it? Because at the time, they need help, they’re not attacking us (and as such are not valid targets), and because God tells us to:
“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” Genesis 1:28
On a side note about gasoline, Valero had fire in one of their units in CC Thursday before last. As of yesterday, it was still not back up. That one unit accounts for 80,000 barrels of gasoline and 7500 barrels of distillates per day.
Most coastal residents should have already filled up last week. That is part of hurricane prep.
So it’s not just me? Operation squirrel rescue must be perpetrated by people in shock. Or small grade-school children.
