Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Bummer. I’m kind of hoping downtown is relatively unscathed. If we can’t work in the building on Monday, I have to go to Austin.
I wonder if the ambulances are headed to that large fire in Houston.
The last I heard was that the Coast Guard was in radio contact with the freighter. That was about 2 hours ago.
Everyone on the ship was OK and a Coast Guard commander said that they were gonna send out a tug as soon as weather permitted.
Hummmm,So the waves are peaking now.
Anderson just showing tape of ambulences around a scene (I came to it mid-clip) and saying they had tried to save 10 people but just couldn’t. Looked like an accident maybe but I can’t be sure...but it definitely was NOT the train incident here in CA and he had just been talking about a lot of ambulences near him in Houston so I’m guessing something happened there.
Anyone see more?
HA! Looks like he got thrown to the top of a palm tree high above the surf.
I know, that's why I said the surge would not a problem at your location. The rain, might be a different story, but we'll have to see.
Dr. Wife insisted on driving down to Killeen and then on to Austin this afternoon and evening. She is suffering from a Grandbaby Deficit Disorder. She'll spend the night in Austin. I'm expected to drive down to Austin tomorrow, but I'm not taking the Road of Death (Kills more soldiers than the Taliban) in 30 mph winds, with higher gusts and heavy rain, So if those are the conditions tomorrow around noon, the great nieces and I will stay here and she can come back up later in the day, or even Sunday morning.
FWIW, Fox news Houston reporting that the water is now over the 17' seawall in Galveston, and the water is getting into the San Luis hotel lot (where the mayor and all the reporters are holed up). That's right on Seawall Blvd.

Not going to happen. They might as well be on the moon right now.
It looks like jerry is getting se winds so anyone nw of this storm is gettin the brunt.
Sarah is definitely a force to be reckoned with. It makes me laugh, remembering Obama saying that John didn’t know who he was dealing with, after the Britney ad, shakes head. Seriously. A man who has been a prisoner of war, and a woman who has 5 children, lives in AK, and shoots mooses ; p

Regular storm surf waves peaking now, yes.
Inside the eye, anything goes, but usually not sustained as far as direction is concerned.
Thanks!

LOL!
Probably (still) dodging bullets in Afghanistan! :^D
IS GONE
:)Ahh the eye is closer. He let go of the Palm Tree.
Note to those who have never been through one of these before. People are going to get very different amounts of calm time in the eye. Some will get over an hour and some only a few minutes. Do not go too far from your shelter if you go out in the eye. When you start to feel a breeze come up ( if you had total calm ) that means you’re only minutes away from the other side of the storm. Do not commit to doing anything that will strand you outside. Unless it’s to save a life, nothing is worth the risk.
Geraldo is in the eye and still alive... I think it might be time for bed. I hope everyone stays safe. I pray that what we have seen will transfer to utter destruction.
I’m biased to begin with. My folks voted for statehood in 1959 and hunted big game to put food on the table. :^)
