Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Ah, yes. Perhaps they should bump it up 24 hours and call it Friday Night/Saturday Morning Live because that will be when we need his Messiah powers :-)
Oh, I know what’s happening. I’m in the line of fire. I’m just trying to figure out how a 23-hour difference can be deemed concurrent.
Damn New Math.
We are far enough from the water not to be worried. My concern is the wind that will hit us this evening.
Right there with you Tim. I have enough food for about 5 days but if we still do not have power on Sunday I am bugging out to Aransas Pass. I can work out of my weekend place for a week or so.
Hang in there.
they happen in all monsoon environments
Thanks for the link. Good info.
Where are you?
Well..if a tanker comes riding in on a wave from the gulf and hits his high rise hotel, it won’t matter how tall the building is, it will likely go down.
Once the debris gets to swirling around, folks are going to die. This is very disturbing to watch already.
Did they learn nothing from the Mississippi gulf coast during Katrina?
There was nothing LEFT!!
yea... By this morning, he probably saw water already starting to come over the wall... and, began to respect the power of this storm..
I sure hope so... Cause, I honestly believe their will be no survivors from San Leon.
I’m very afraid that this storm is going to cause far more devastation than most people expect...
What time you think we’re gonna get some wind?
I just went out and moved all the potted plants inside off the patio, and it is STILL and HOT out there.
Hey there! How’s your Mom doing?
Our prayers will be with you. Please be careful.
“And his freaking out about the corps of engineer guy swimming, Whorealdo is dangerous, seriously, a Darwin award candidate.”
Saw that. He thought he was the first person to discover and report that someone was drowning...frantically yelling for someone to help the guy...
turned out the guy had a life jacket on and was being towed by a rope? Right? Geraldo is a nutbar.
Gas in Illinois and Kentucky is as high as $5 now. It jumped nearly $2 overnight.
Here in Western Kentucky stations have gas at $4.59 in Lone Oak. This rose $1 in four hours last night.
Gas was $3.50 yesterday at noon.
Cars are lined up into the streets. Some stations are out of gas. This all started at 5 PM last night.
How does one prepare for 2 weeks without power? You plan a trip to the high country, NM, CO,MT. I grew up in Houston without A/C I am too old to go back to that.
Glad my house is clean cause I can’t break away from that cam :D
Godspeed to all in Ike's path.
Amen to that.
FNC just mentioned this...
Ship Carrying 22 People Stranded Off Galveston in Path of Hurricane Ike
Im in the line of fire.
Stay safe!
I can’t confirm this, but I’ve read on another forum that people saw on TWC where Jim “Storm Stud” Cantore said that HALF of the people on Galveston Island did not evacuate. Thirty thousand people are still on that island. Eighteen hours to landfall, water’s already flooding the streets and pounding the seawall, and there’s still 30,000 people in one of the worst, most vulnerable spots to be in right now. God help ‘em all, because I think they’re going to need it.

and it is still so early, will everything be covered by water when this is over?
