Jill Stanek: Obama digs deeper on 'pay grade' gaffe
WorldNetDaily ^ | 9/10/08 | Jill Stanek

For a topic the mainstream media, liberals and pollsters keep saying no one cares about, the abortion issue sure has been getting a lot of attention lately – have you noticed?

But I digress.

On ABC's "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos this past Sunday, Barack Obama tried to undo the damage he inflicted on himself at the Aug. 16 Saddleback Showdown with his now infamous "above my pay grade" response to Rick Warren's question, "At what point does a baby get human rights, in your view?"

But Obama hadn't learned. He tried once again to redirect the clearly constitutionally based question into something esoteric and religious, and therefore unsolvable:

Obama: "I mean, what I intended to say is that, as a Christian, I have a lot of humility about understanding when does the soul enter into …"

Stephanopoulos: "It goes back to Augustine."

Obama: "It does. It's a pretty tough question. And so, all I meant to communicate was that I don't presume to be able to answer these kinds of theological questions. What I do know is that abortion is a moral issue, that it's one that families struggle with all the time, and that in wrestling with those issues, I don't think that the government criminalizing the choices that families make is the best answer for reducing abortions."

Warren clearly had not asked, "When does a baby get a soul?"

Nevertheless, Obama continued to feign ignorance, which begged the next question Stephanopoulos didn't ask: Why so avidly support abortion if you're not sure it may kill innocent human souls?

And what did Obama mean by "abortion is a moral issue"? This begged the next question Stephanopoulos didn't ask, simply, "Why?" What is it about abortion that makes it a moral issue?

I have been noticing in the past few weeks how even the liberals I know are getting sick of the militant abortion movement.

Just FYI — I know more than a few Pro-Life libertarians (and Libertarians for that matter). The Pro-Life libertarian correctly recognizes that this matter is a STATE’s Rights Issue and that Roe v. Wade overstepped the bounds of the Constitution. The Pro-Life libertarian views abortion (rightly) as MURDER - a violation of the right to life of the unborn. Just as murder laws are, the laws and punishments for abortion (as murder) should be addressed in State law.

I honestly don’t understand where you come up with equating Obama’s ideology and libertarian ideology to begin with. Obama is very clearly a Marxist/Communist/Socialist - and there’s NOTHING libertarian about that...

Yeah, that would be a better title.

My point is that the alleged "tough questions" about "ensoulment" don't apply to late abortions or the "live birth" botched abortions. Obama should be able to figure that out. So should Pelosi and Biden. There is no question that the unborn are living human beings.

See Pelosi’s comments on abortion a few weeks back to understand where Stephanopoulos came up with that comment. Pelosi stated that the Catholic Church has long “debated” the subject of when life begins, pointing to Augustine who pondered when exactly the soul becomes attached to the physical body. The Catholic Church was quick to not only condemn, but correct this fallacy.

One the eve of 9/11 I'd like to point out..Parts of victims were identified by a piece of tissue and matched to strands of hair in a hair brush.

In each and every cell of the body ( with the exception of Red Blood Cells that lack a nucleus) is encoded the DNA of that human. That DNA has it's beginning in the fusion of the gametes.

From that moment there exists a new and unique human that has never existed before. (I am excepting identical twins from this discussion ) .

The schizophrenia over this issue breaks down to it is acceptable to murder humans at one age but not at a different age.

The argument that the location makes the difference as a deciding factor is a straw argument. Using this fabrication you could claim justifiable homicide for any in-law that overstayed their welcome in your home.

Self awareness is equally a straw argument. All of us are unself aware every night when we sleep. Should murder of a sleeping individual be weighed differently than an awake one.

Ultimately you get down to the inescapable fact that the entire basis for the debate is the fact that a group of individuals want to kill other humans and do it without repercussion and under the protection of the law.

And that same group of individuals demands that every one else participate in their deadly charade.

It was odd that he even brought that up. It looked like Mr Stephanopolous was trying to help Senator Obama by throwing out a red herring. I believe his father is an influential Orthodox priest, so George should have know better.

'The schizophrenia over this issue breaks down to it is acceptable to murder humans at one age but not at a different age."

That's the heart of it.

No problem. Just getting the Truth out and the Lord's Word is our mission.

Obama was not raised as a Christian. He seems a little behind in theology. But then so do Pelosi and Biden who are old enough to know better. The church does not accept the theories of ancient pagan philosophers about delayed "ensoulment" or embryos without souls. It's irresponsible of Pelosi or Biden to try to bring that up, as if it proves anything. We know that the unborn respond to sound and pain now from Ultrasound. It's an observable fact, not a "tough question" or a debate or some strange theological mystery which people are not sure about.

I still maintain he knew before that he was going to be asked that,

He had to assume there would be an abortion question. He figured that since he was appearing with a Christian pastor, it would be a religious question. He prepared an answer for the wrong question and was too cavalier to listen to the actual question as asked.

I think the answer here is that George is a Clintonite. He may SOUND like he supports Obama, but in reality I think he’s looking forward to an Obama loss, and Hillary running in 2012.

Way before Augustine. Dumb.

Well of course. Georgie boy wouldn't know St. Augustine from Ceasar Augustus. He was just aping Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi from earlier in the week.

Obama has no humility whatsoever.

And to do what Obama did in Illinois- to argue against a bill to protect aborted children born alive— says what we need to know about Obama’s character as far as feeling compassion for the human soul of an infant.

Stuffontopofthis let him off the hook. Poor seminary candidate he was.

LOL! So now is Obama quoting St. Augustine like Pelosi and Biden did. They were wrong. And here is the list of Bishops that said they were wrong!

Updated: American Bishops who have spoken against Pelosi

Here is the complete list of American bishops who have responded to Nancy Pelosi's comments so far:
  1. Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver was the first American bishop to respond
  2. ... Bishop James Conley, his auxiliary, joined him
  3. Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington DC responded twice, first in a press release and second in a statement to The Hill. He has also appeared on Fox News, I am told.
  4. Cardinal Justin Regali of Philadelphia, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued this statement through the USCCB website...
  5. ... Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport, chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, joined him
  6. Cardinal Edward Egan of New York publised a strongly worded statement of his own
  7. Bishop Samuel Aquila of Fargo issued a letter correcting Pelosi's claims
  8. Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh and...
  9. ... Bishop Michael Sheridan of Colorado Springs have chimed-in
  10. Archbishop Jose Gomez of San Antonio, CNA reports has added his voice ...
  11. ... Bishop Oscar Cantu, his auxiliary bishop, has joined him
  12. Bishop William Murphy of Rockville has published an extensive letter
  13. Bishop Edward Slattery of Tulsa has a detailed response
  14. Bishop Kevin Farrell of Dallas has joined the USCCB's efforts
  15. Bishop Gregory Aymond of Austin is on-board
  16. Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston mentions the USCCB on his blog
  17. Bishop Thomas Wenski of Orlando has written at length
  18. Archbishop John Nienstedt of Saint Paul/Minneapolis challenges Pelosi's statement
  19. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, President of the US Bishops, has weighed-in
  20. Bishop Robert Vasa of Baker, OR publishes in the Catholic Sentinel
  21. Bishop Jerome Listecki of La Crosse, WI responds in a word document
  22. Bishop Richard Lennon of Cleveland, OH will comment in his September 5th column (PDF)
  23. Bishop Ralph Nickless of Sioux City, IA has one of the very best responses I've read
  24. Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco has invited Pelosi to a "conversation"
  25. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn: "Judging the Candidates"

{Last updated on September 10th.}

Notes:

  • Previous #23 has been removed. Bishop Joseph Gossman of Raleigh, NC is actually the bishop emeritus, and the new bishop, Michael Burbidge has not, to my knowledge, made a personal statement.
  • Previous #16 has also been removed, it was an erroneous duplication of current #13.
  • #26 was added September 10th, although he published his column September 6th

Obama doesn't really care because to him all morality is relative.

With the minor exception of his beliefs.
