Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

A natural sponge is the best thing going when you want to wash up in a rustic area. They hold lots of water for rinsing.
A Chamois also works well for washing and drying.

I'm wrapping my mind around that footage, as I know the area well. Pirate's Beach and the West End in general is a place where you can drive your car right down to the water and park on the sand.

With the waves already washing away foot bridges from the dunes, the water is already over the top of the cars, if any were there. There is no beach.

Yow.

GO.

The wind is not the thing to look at here. The table of “typical storm surge from Cat.2, etc” is not the thing to look at.

The critical item in this storm that makes it unusual is the SIZE and central PRESSURE - water is getting sucked up in a huge area. The storm surge is going to be much higher than typical, as they’ve reported overe and over.

Anyone under 20 feet ASL is going to be swamped. The waves driven in addition to that are going to pummel structures that are swamped.

I hope you’re gone. arkady was right - let him be the idiot you can get a six pack from him or something later on.

There is a whole lot around Galveston Bay that will not be there on Sunday.

Al Roker on the Today show reports the Galveston seawall is 7’..........I’m sure it’s 17’ So he says the surge will overtop the wall by 13’. They should check their sources.........but of course they’ve had everyone busy on Sarah’s interview trying to find fault with it.

Listening to Internet BR radio live right now...numerous reports of flooding from IKE, power outages, school closures, sounds like BR was not prepared for this on the heels of Gustav. lots of high water and traffic lights going out in areas that had gotten power back after Gus. Schools calling in saying they are closing, no power.
