Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Hope our trip is as quick and easy! Just heading out...from Nederland...

We live in the area w/ a Port Arthur address, near the mall...police calling all residents saying pretty much, “Get your a** out NOW...!”

Yep, that takes me back to the late 60’s when that song first came out.

I was in Denver at the time, fresh out of the Marine Corps. Late fall 1967 early 1968.

I’m concerned that this bad boy could cross the Mississippi, going right over Bahbah’s (and, by the way, my mother’s - about 75 miles away) house as a TS....

That could be *very* bad news, indeed.....

Early AM. Unnngh. I blame the Navy. They made me an earlybird.

They also taught me to tie knots, swim with weights, cuss, drink whiskey and how to stop chasing women but actually catch them. All in all, that’s a wash.

The swimming bit might be handy soon...

Thanks, Ike, I am way out of the path of this monster. Otheres are not so fortunate.

It appears that it will head up my way once it hits land, but it will be quite worn out before it gets here.

I hope you’re right, Bahbah...

The projected track shows it may still be Tropical Storm strength as it crosses the Mississippi - as everything else about IKE has been atypical, this ain’t showing the overland weakening pattern that we’ve become accustomed to...

Won’t hurt to keep an eye on it — and remember where your flashlights are stashed.... ;~)

Awwww, those are the most delicious avocados ever. I had a huge tree in my backyard in Miami Shores Florida. I grew it from a pit and it grew like Topsy. Oh, how I miss that wonderful taste. The ones we get here are small and awful.

I was surprised to see this in our forecast from the National Weather Service. "Winds could gust as high as 105 mph."

Local 2 Houston just did a report from Pirate’s Beach. (Galveston West End)

The reporter was on the first landing of a beach acceess bridge when a wave pounded him up to the knees. The lower part of the stairs where he was standing partly broke free and began to float.

Ike is already busting wood structures in Galveston some five feet above sea level, 24 hours out.

Wow.

I wish there was something I could do to help but I'm in northern Alabama.

I'm suggesting again this time as I did the last to contact your media. Your EOC needs a good embarrassment story on the news. Also, contact your Texas State Rep.
