Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Yeah, we finally saw sunlight this afternoon. Still under a high surf advisory from Ike, although the flood threat has finally dissipated now that Ike is 560 miles away.

Limestone county - I don’t blame you for leaving, and GodSpeed on your journey. You guys really got whacked with Rita. We have to stay, because my husband is an un-official community leader here and we have a lot of little old folks in mobile homes we need to watch out for...

Chainsaws up!

Maybe Golden?? Or near Lake Tawakoni, then?
Anyway ...

I got a call from my aunt tonight around 8:30. She
asked me if I have heard from my Dad. He hadn’t
called me. She said he is in the hospital again,
this time with a “kink” in his intestine. So they
are doing surgery in the morning to take care of
that. My aunt and uncle will go to the hospital
in the morning to be with Dad for his surgery. The’re
driving up from Tyler.

So Dad won’t be around the house to deal with whatever
the storm might deal out to the house. (And power
outages are a common occurance at his place, even without
any hurricanes around, lol!).

Not too much happenin’ there, I think, lol!

My Dad was born and raised very close to Quitman.
He enlisted in the Air Force in 1949, served 26 years
and retired at Carswell AFB in Ft. Worth. He moved to
Quitman around 1979 and has lived there ever since.

It actually is more happenin’ now than when the folks
moved out there. Used to be that when they pulled up
to Highway 37 from CR 2140, there wasn’t hardly ever
a car to have to wait for. Now, there is a lot more
traffic and one has to wait for a clear way to get on
to 37 ...

Don’t know about the Witchita lineman, but I sure as hell thank the Alabama lineman who turned our power back on yesterday.

I know the feeling.
It was the linemen from North Carolina who restored our power after Katrina.

Here’s an update from Central Louisiana:

We’ve already had winds strong enough that some homes in Alexandria have lost power tonight.

As I’ve said before, the thing that scares me the most is the fact that we’ve got debris EVERYWHERE left over from Gustav. People in my neighborhood have been using chainsaws around the clock to cut down parts of damaged trees (and yes, this is *Pineville* and the pine trees do break in the middle). For the most part, the branches are stacked neatly at curbside (though pickups that don’t seem to be scheduled very often), but that isn’t going to mean a thing when tropical storm force winds send them flying in every direction.

Another thing that caught my eye was a discussion thread on The Town Talk, Alexandria’s newspaper with an online forum. Someone wrote in to complain about the stupidity of their neighbors who dispose of tree parts and other storm debris by tossing them into drainage ditches, thereby hindering the flow of water and creating floods.

I realize that Gustav is probably last week’s news in many people’s minds, but it’s just way too soon for this part of Louisiana to be hit again by Ike. The thought of all these severed tree limbs turning into flying projectiles is very scary to me, to put it mildly!
