Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.
Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.
The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Liberal democrat attorneys from Chicago never stop voting. Particularly after death.
Grapefruit are pretty wind sturdy on our tree. I have a terrible time with the giant avocados during a tropical storm.
LOL... you lead a horse to water, but... you can't put lipstick on it. ??
"Riding this one out... inland, at high elevation might be fun and exciting. Riding it out on Galveston Island is a death wish."
NWS now is predicting near-hurricane force winds up as far as Palestine, TX - about 200 miles or so from the coast. Dropping off rapidly north of that.
I’ve been looking for an avacodo tree. I used to have one but my husband’s dog ate it. He ate my strawberries and banana trees too.
what the heck... maybe he figures he’s a good swimmer.
Then I would be speaking of the husband and dog in the past tense, too :)
I sure hope his will is up to date then.
Seriously, tell us if he makes it.
My rabbit ate my Mango trees.
Dang animals
Kept the husband . The Dalmation is gone. He was stolen. I did not even file a report. I figured who ever took him was already getting punished enough.
I hope she enjoys her trip. I've learned one thing--not knowing what's happening isn't the worst thing in the world...sometimes might be nice. She is happy all the time which is nice...doesn't talk much but says funny things when she does. IOW, besides being my mother, I enjoy and LIKE her.
lol
Any thoughts on my #789?
Earlier you said evac would be difficult: not so! She’ll probably be excited by the act itself. Play it up! Describe the scenes and scenarious to her.
That’s what I do with my two grandmothers in exciting times: if they sense everything’s under control, they enjoy them, too.
11 PM Discussion is now saying Ike may not strengthen to Cat 3. THAT is certainly good news...
I’ve been a little worried, since IKE seems to be pushing away all the dry air to the west. It’s looking more circular again... I’ve been afraid that would lead to some strengthening... but, still we have no real eye.
Please Lord, just let it come on in before it gets wound up.
This looks exceptionally disorganized and a huge wind field. The big wind danger is in tight smaller storms. Think of an ice skater in a spin. As the skater pulls in tight they spin faster. Same with hurricanes. Charley was pretty tame until it got tight then we got over 192 MPH.

Notice how tight and perfect the eye and general symmetry is.
It moved fast and got tight and just a few hundred meters outside the pink cones produced no damage. Big anti-surge - all the water was sucked out to sea.

The big danger in a storm like Ike is when they are slow and this one is slow. The surge is determined by bottom conditions and DURATION and direction of the wind. Looks like at 11 MPH the eastern quadrant could get some surge where the bottom comes up on a modest slope.
There of course is always flash flood damage from rain. I can tell you from FL Ike is a wet one.
In a place that had recent winds or good codes (i.e. most of FL) there should not be too much wind damage beyond power lines.
That’s great advice for anyone anytime.
Thanks.
