Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.
Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.
The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Pine trees snap in the middle. I had a pine tree snap in the middle during Fran and was lucky enough for the top half to miss both my and my neighbor's houses.
The credit for tagline goes to Aggie Mama...it is a great idea!
No, we won’t get drunk. Four folks and one bottle of champagne? Not likely.
Just remember, lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
The main body of Ike is larger than the entire coastline of Texas. No matter where is goes, it is going to cause grief.
Whoa.
I sent my husband that picture, and he responded, “Damn!! Karl Rove is pissed!”
You be careful there, Xena!
As of last hour, wave height is already 28 ft. and pressure still going down.
I intend to mix it up in some seltzer IF we loose our power. Being in Tulsa, I'm sure we'll likely just get some heavy rain, and we might loose our power due to Ike.
The kids are hoping we loose our power, just so they can FINALLY get to try this stuff!
Seven pine trees didn't know that when Rita came thru my yard. lol
Gov Perry just said the storm has changed direction to east rather than west.
I am now convinced Ike will not strengthen much before landfall. It looks great, but it can’t fully get rid of the inner eyewall and double wind maxes.
It may grow to 110 mph winds or so before landfall.
But, I highly, highly doubt it will be a cat 4 or even a high cat 3.
Maybe a low-end cat 3......maybe....
Regardless, even at a cat 2 it will do a lot of damage with a monstrous surge even with weaker winds.
“... east rather than west.”
LOL! Guv Good Hair says Florida can have it.
LOL They never do.
And here is a loop of Katrina: ..Katrina Loop..
Yeah, Gov is having a very bad hair day. I guess his hairdresser evacuated.

NN: Just want to thank you again for all of these threads. You are just awesome and a special place in heaven for you.
To all of you in the path of this storm....good luck, stay safe, and Pray.
Leaving the 77571 zip code in an hour or so.
Last one leaving the coastal areas turn out the lights...
The weathernerds over at easternuswx.com can’t figure this storm out, and that includes the professionals. Ike is apparently breaking a few “rules” about tropical cyclones. Instead of the winds speeding up as the pressure drops, they’re expanding and pushing more water around.
That thought about using kinetic energy to measure a storm is interesting. I guess it comes back to the question of what’s “worse”—a small powerful Cat 4/5 hurricane like Andrew, or a monstrous Cat 2 like Ike? (Depends on where you live, I reckon.)
I’ve got a friend in Pasadena...hope she’s going to be OK.
