Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.
Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.
The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Prayers up for our FRiends in Texas
Seriously, my prayers go out to those in Ike's path. Stay safe, y'all.

Mayor Bill White is on the local news right now giving updates about evacuations, cautioning everyone about what a dangerous storm this is. He is suggesting to businesses that non-essential personnel stay home tomorrow.
77058, 77059, 77062, 77520, 77546, 77571, 77586, 77598 are zip codes that are subject to 15 foot storm surge and need to evacuate now.
Am I the only one who notices there is hardly any coverage of this storm? Gustav and MO had 10 times more, what’s up with the news channels?
Witnessing a convoy of utility trucks from other states en route to assist after a storm...puts a lump in my throat every time.
I am guessing it is the 9-11 anniversary this morning.
and right now they are all in louisiana working on gustav
It's because the storm is heading for Texas instead of Louisiana.
So far they have had very little about 9-11 and very little on Ike. Good thing we have local news here in Texas with information. It now looks like this is going more toward Galveston,
I think Gustav was more sensational with the possibility of levees breaking and flooding the city again.
Good buoy to watch it should be in the path, note the near 85 degree water feeding this storm as well.Barometer still dropping.
yea... I've noticed that as well. Storm Fatigue, I suppose... and, now we have LIPSTICK to talk about. This dis-interest is one of the reasons I've had such a bad feeling about this storm for the past 5 days.
The media will not do 9-11 stories this close to the election, it might remind people of the rats true colors. The hurricane, it's Texas, it's a "non story".
Yea.. I gotta tell ya, I'm not a big fan of the "MANDATORY" evacs for the entire county. Areas north of Angleton are more than 30' above sea level. Storm surge is NOT going to reach them. If you live in an apartment, mobile home, a lightly constructed home, or a home surrounded by big trees (not many of those around there)... then, yea... you probably want to leave.
But, if you're in a well constructed , brick home.. you're probably better off stocking up on supplies, and riding it out in the strongest part of your house.
I think... the city plans should included having some buildings that can withstand 150+ MPH winds...where, people can shelter during the worst.
“Am I the only one who notices there is hardly any coverage of this storm? Gustav and MO had 10 times more, whats up with the news channels?”
That is because the media was praying for New Orleans to be destroyed by Gustav in order to ‘help’ their candidate, Obama!
No further proof of media bias is needed now. (eye roll)
TexGal,
What is your elevation there? And, are east or west of I-45?
If you’re on the east side... you may not be safe... even under a metal roof and storm windows.
ANYBODY living from Clear Lake City down to Texas City, Galveston, Freeport, Lake Jackson.... needs to get the hell out.
If this track continues, there is not going to be much left in Clear Lake City. You won’t be able to recognize the streets when you come back.
It is very odd for me to be on this side of the hurricane! Usually my sister in TX is watching the storm hit me (south alabama)!
