Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

I am just hoping that we get some rain in your area. The lake at DCS is down several feet. Please keep me updated on what is going on in the area.

3 mil construction debris bags work best. Available at Lowes, Home Depot, etc.

We live in Conroe and in 1983 when Alicia came to town we were without power for six days. I’ll never forget crouching in the closet and wondering if that howling wind would ever stop. We cooked outside for every meal and our children loved it. We all cried when the power came back on. August in southeast Texas is a new kind of hot.

It will probably be a last minute realization by the ones in charge - We’d better warn people - and it will cause panic. All they need to hear is, ‘As big as Katrina’ and they’ll be in a state. Be safe.

Hey, Beckybea...

I used to live in Conroe and my folks still do (Rivershire). We moved to Corpus about 6 years ago.

Hope all goes well over there for all of you!

Isn’t Rivershire where you cross that little barned-in bridge to get to the subdivision?

You’re thinking about River Plantation. Lived there 35 years and have moved
to Teaswood. About 15 miles north of the San Jacinto Bridge. Thanks for
your concern.

Close...that’s River Plantation. Rivershire is off of Gladstell.

Your hamster comments made me laugh! Thanks for the levity... praying, as always.

(Hmmm.... waiting for someone to create a Hurricane Hamster graphic now!)

We just saw this on the 10;pm news. Brazoria County is a BIG county. I can't believe the northern part needs to be evacuated. Our ranch is in the southern part of the county and my husband is worried sick about his baby calves.

I’m in Katy. This could still move up a little more north. We’ll have to wait and see.

The Miami Relatives would be equally cool - they’d probably have a samba flair.

That doesn’t stop me from worrying about you. I;m worried about my cousins in Friendswood and Pearland, also. One has a half-dozen house guests from Argentina! They’re staying put.

Bacon Man and Hap are in your neck of the woods. As far as I know, since they moved there a few years back, they haven’t felt a particular threat from any storm.

Hurricane Alicia brought down our pine tree and part of our fence but the house wasn’t damaged in the least. We should be fine here.
