Obama gets ovation with ‘lipstick on pig’

LEBANON, Va - Democrat Barack Obama enjoys poking fun at his Republican opponents and their claims to being “agents of change.”

“You can put lipstick on a pig. It’s still a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered and yelled and eventually got to their feet.

“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”

“We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”

The audience, which had a particularly strong reaction whenever Obama mentioned Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, appeared to enjoy the “lipstick” comment the most.

When Palin gave her acceptance speech at the Republican convention in St. Paul she joked about being a hockey mom, saying the only difference between a pitbull and a hockey mom was lipstick.

“it’s still just a communist”

Or, to coin a phrase—”call a spade a spade.”

I’m sorry folks, I have to agree 100% with Lyford here. I just watched the clip and Palin wasn’t mentioned anywhere near this remark. He mentioned McCain, and then he mentioned McCain’s policies, and then he used a fairly common metaphor. Do you honestly think Obama is THAT stupid?

This is asinine “gotcha” politics instead of winning on the issues.

“Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another’s statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved.” —Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises 22

The audience perceived it as a come back comment to Palin statement.

Of course! And that is obviously what he intended. Geez, you'd have to be living under a rock not to see this.

True to his islamic roots....women are pigs to them. For reproduction only. His Islam’s idea of a hot night out is a small boy or a goat.

Obama is a sorry sack of dog doo IMO.

Stupid women voters (and the idiot so called American males) who cheered for that insult are THE PROBLEM !

Here’s DU’s reaction.

Like I care what the denizens of that sewer think...

He absolutely meant to call her a Pig

Very possibly.

and did so.

No, he didn't. He didn't even imply it. He used a cliche which allowed others to infer it.

Are you asking me to try and read his mind again over what he “meant” to say?

Nope. I'm saying that I don't care what he "meant" to say. What he actually said, the actual words that he used and the actual context in which he used them, fall well within the bounds of acceptable political discourse. We know that the words are words he has used before in a context that could not possibly have implied that Sarah Palin, or any other woman, is a pig.

I like K-lo's take in the Corner:
"Perhaps if it would provide an instructive mirror. We won't get mad if you use "lipstick on a pig" in reference to our team if you don't go bananas if we use "pot calling the kettle black" or any of another possibilities that the hypersensitive would scream about. It could be a cultural deep breath. "

That's all I'm saying.

And let's consider one more take on it. Let's say that a) Obama called Palin a pig and b) everyone knows it. How does it benefit the Republicans to whine about it? Take the high road. If everyone perceives him as calling her a pig, it'll hurt him much, much more than her. There's absolutely no political benefit for him (other than briefly amusing the furthest reaches of his base, the people who are going to show up and vote no matter what he says). Really, the Republicans should be quiet and pray that he calls her a pig again tomorrow and the next day.

You are very naive. This was definitely a subtle slam at Palin. Obama just thought he could get away with it because it is a commonly used metaphor.

The DUmmies certainly “got it” and thought it no accident.

You are wrong.

Using the words “pig” and “stinky fish” when talking about his opposition is a gross insult.

Agreed O was well aware of the lipstick context. If he was not, he should have been.

Of what else is he unaware? Words matter in this job more than any other on the planet as he has claimed in this campaign.

Whether he meant to insult Sarah or not he insulted her and the 100 million voters who are watching her back right now.

Maybe the teleprompter was malfunctiong...

“Do you honestly think Obama is THAT stupid?”

No, I think Obama believes that the use of these phrases is quite clever. Look, this guy isn’t the Messiah, he’s a Demo politician who isn’t above anything. It’ll get much worse between now and November 4th, trust me.

The DUmmies minds are always in the gutter. You could mention meat loaf and they’d turn it into something disgusting.

Like Lyford said: if Obama meant it, then let him keep saying it.

How does it benefit the Republicans to whine about it? Take the high road.

No one will ever know it happened if the Republicans don't make a "big deal" over it. Do you think "Maccaca" would have been a big deal unless the Dems pushed it?

If you think for one minute that he did not direct this at Palin, you are very naive. He gets a “two for” out of it. First there is the immediate crowd reaction and DU appreciation. Second, he can be sanctimonious with his defense along the lines you brought up, accusing the McCain / Palin campaign of being thin skinned and disingenuous by looking for offense where there is none. The press will buy it but I won't.

I don't know either, and I been through Constitutional Law myself. It was my best grade in law school.

According to Obama, I'm not alive. I was not "9 months to term" when I was born....so I must be a ghost.

And as they said to Obama, I mean Walter Peck in the mayor's office in Ghostbusters. Is this true? Yes it's true..this man has no
