Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.
"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."
"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."
"We've had enough of the same old thing."
The crowd apparently took the "lipstick" line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: "lipstick."

I saw a wonderful anagram of “lipstick on a pig” = “sap politicking”. LOLOL! I think I’m changing my tag.

I agree. I have wondered the same things myself - is he just slow or is he trying to be politically correct and say what he knows his “peeps” want to hear? I tend to think more the second - but either would be bad. I am not sure this man has any original thoughts.
I know how you feel. I didn’t like Bill Clinton but I didn’t feel like fingernails were scraping the chalkboard when he talked. I literally am in agony listening to BO; I can’t bear the thought of 4 years of that drivel; not to mention what he’s going to do to our economy by driving up all of our taxes.

Easily...but comments like these tend to take a life of their own unrelated to why would vote or not vote for someone.

You have said something that bears further explanation.
It is not that Obama called her a pig, because he didn’t.
He very carefully made sure the remark was made in reference to the McCain/Palin campaign strategy.
The ‘trick’ was to find a phrase, that could be used, and had the word ‘lipstick’ in it. Then to use it carefully so he had plausible deniability.
And he did that. The important part, and the one that you hit on, is that it made the ‘link’ in the minds of the audience. The conception that the remark ‘really’ applied to Sarah Palin, was all in the mind of the listener.
It is a simple mental trick, and advertisers use the same trick all the time.

Again. Without any foreknowledge, you hit upon another trick.
You could not see the expression on Obama’s face, as he said the remarks, because he put his hand up to cover his face, while he said those words.
It’s a ‘tell’, actually. Like when you are about to say something to another person, that is considered really risque. You turn your head away from them, and lower your voice some while saying it. You don’t look them in the eyes. Kind of pretending you didn’t really just say that.

That is correct.
What he did is use a simple advertising trick (psychological trick) as bait on a hook to get the audience to make the connection, via the word ‘lipstick’.
Well, that makes it pretty hard for DEMOCRATS to deny they are calling Sarah Palin a pig. Even if Obama wasn’t.
