Gun sales are going boom around the country as gun owners and gun advocates brace for a potential Democrat in the White House for the first time in almost 10 years.
Democrats, meanwhile, say there's no reason to worry that presidential hopeful Barack Obama would attempt to curtail access to most guns, though that hasn't stopped the buying spree.
"You'd be surprised," said Jeff Mercer, manager of George's Pawn and Gun Shop on High Street. "It's people of all races, too. People are scared."
Across town at The Gun Doctor and More on Glencrest Lane, owner Bob Godell said he has also noticed a similar trend.
"We call it the Obama factor. People are very concerned that if a Democrat is elected they will see more restrictions on handguns and assault rifles." Godell said. "I think as a result of that we have seen steady handgun sales, and there's been an increase in the sale of assault rifles like AK-47s, as well."
Gregg County Republican Party Chairman Keith Rothra said Obama's support for gun control has made some Republicans leery.
"Barack Obama seems to think that we'd be safer if people didn't have handguns, and that's false," Rothra said. "I have heard several people say they are going to buy handguns as a just-in-case thing because they don't know what's going to happen."

Having lived through two race riots I consider this prudent.
Bought my first gun—a rifle—last month; joined the NRA last week; going to my first gun clinic this weekend. And I’m already looking to complement my rifle with a shotgun and a pistol. The Second Amendment ROCKS!
*Glad some adjustments in our gun laws went into effect this week(Ohio castle law).
Although if 0bama continue his meltdown I feel the likelihood diminishes, if the race remains close...then there will be trouble. If the media insists on false poll reporting, there will be trouble. Which they should be held legally accountable.
this is silly. even southern democrats dont mess with gun rights. they know they wont be reelected. the assault weapons ban was silly, uninformed, and knee-jerk. it wont happen again.
I was thinking another AR would be a good choice :-)) Fun to shoot ...
RE: “I wonder how many new gun buyers are buying guns in the event Obama LOSES and riots break out.”
YESSS!!!!! My thoughts exactly! I’ve never owned a gun but am seriously thinking of hurrying up and getting one and taking some shooting lessons right now. I’d have to hurry as there is a wait period here.
Your view is what I thought when I read the headline — things could get really ugly in various places, and Los Angeles (my area) would likely be one of them. Question is, would there be rioting only if the O loses, or if he wins as well? Celebratory rioting?
Judging from sports victories/defeats of recent years, it’s hard to tell.
Thanks. I’ve had it for a while.
Buy lotsa ammo too.
Hell, here in Virginia we have to buy one a month. It's the law. It says right here, "one handgun a month."
Every time my wife catches me bringing home another one she asks, "Another gun?" I just tell her that I'm doing my part to keep them off the street. She doesn't know how successful I've become.
Good point. We need a new line of T-shirts. “Help, I’m black. Will riot for anything.”
Exactly what supporter's are you referring to?
When you said..."they"....it comes across as racist...in many minds.
It doesn't at first in mine....but I would like to know the context of the comment.
If you are a conservative...and don't "see color" then you will know what I am saying.........
The thought never crossed my mind. I used they because I had no names.
Looks like you and I logged in for the first time around the same time. I lurked from March of ‘98 before finally coming on board. I knew you could be talking about your outstanding tagline because taglines weren’t even offered in 2000.
Yeah, I don’t think I started using this one until around 2005, I think.
Thanks!
bump
No problem.
