The Vision of the Left (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | September 9, 2008 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 09/08/2008 8:35:41 PM PDT by jazusamo

Conservatives, as well as liberals, would undoubtedly be happier living in the kind of world envisioned by the left.

Very few people have either a vested interest or an ideological preference for a world in which there are many inequalities.

Even fewer would prefer a world in which vast sums of money have to be devoted to military defense, when so much benefit could be produced if those resources were directed into medical research instead.

It is hardly surprising that young people prefer the political left. The only reason for rejecting the left's vision is that the real world in which we live is very different from the world that the left perceives today or envisions for tomorrow.

Most of us learn that from experience — but experience is precisely what the young are lacking.

"Experience" is often just a fancy word for the mistakes that we belatedly realized we were making, only after the realities of the world made us pay a painful price for being wrong.

Those who are insulated from that pain — whether by being born into affluence or wealth, or shielded by the welfare state, or insulated by tenure in academia or in the federal judiciary — can remain in a state of perpetual immaturity.

Individuals can refuse to grow up, especially when surrounded in their work and in their social life by similarly situated and like-minded people.

I would love to live in a world where there was no need for national defense. We spend hundreds of billions in defense spending each year. Yet, the world as we know it would be very different without our large standing military. The way the Cold War turned out would have been very different if not for our military. And not having any defense would have invited more Sept. 11th’s. I was grateful after Sept. 11th that we had the ability to respond.

Leftists are idealists and just aren’t realistic about certain things.

"It is hardly surprising that young people prefer the political left. ... Most of us learn that from experience — but experience is precisely what the young are lacking."

And of course those older supporters of the leftist agenda are just simply out of their minds.

Yes, leftists have always wanted to cut our military to the bone just like BO has said he will do if elected, for that one reason alone he is scary.

Let Sarah Palin pick Thomas Sowell for VP in 2012 and we will see where the real racism is.

The man is SO on !

I have a very liberal cousin who has a terrible time getting along with her sister. They live half the US away from each other, spending actual time together for maybe a week or so out of the year. They have no weighty issues between them- it isn't as though one of them slept with the other's husband or anything-just childhood resentments.

And yet this cousin cannot conceive of a world where two people have such different points of view that issues simply CANNOT be resolved peacefully.

It baffles me.

Actually, I reject the world of the left because I know that any halcyon ideas about the left’s perfect world are false, and the real world underlying the lie is a horrible, evil place indeed.

To begin with, the left is caught up in the Judeo-Christian mythology, even as they deny Judeo-Christianity. They merely substituted different versions of the same ideas. So what are their goals?

Eventually, a return to the Garden of Eden. A place where history, and the knowledge of good and evil do not exist, where man is just another animal, never again straying from the Garden.

They have renamed the Garden of Eden “The State of Nature”, and it represents a rejection of learning, society, civilization, science, technology, art, and individuality.

To achieve this goal, the left has to dismantle civilization and return man to small tribes, living in isolated villages, with “masters” whose purpose it is to keep man from evolving back to civilization, living in fear and ignorance.

The tool to dismantle civilization is socialism, forcing all mankind to be equal, as a herd is equal, striving towards mediocrity and group behavior. Importantly, this is the only real goal of socialism, so while socialists proclaim its benefits for things like education and health care, it is a lie. All that matters to them is that everyone must do it the same. They are indifferent to the fact that it doesn’t work, providing neither education nor health care.

Oddly enough, there is one situation in which socialism does work: extreme, life threatening deprivation and rationing. If people only have a bare minimum of water and food, it is essential that it be shared equally.

And this is why socialists have no other way of addressing problems than “We must do with less”, “We must pay more”, “We must lower our expectations of the future”. Essentially a pessimistic doctrine, because when there is abundance and prosperity, socialism is not efficient, in fact it is wasteful and stupid.

They must create the situation of shortage and high price, or at least convince people that it is inevitable, like Man Made Global Warming—it is a disaster, so we cannot drive cars and must give socialists political power and money.

People around the world are also very creative in solving problems, so much so that even socialism has proven unable to stifle their creativity and prosperity. So for this reason, the socialist has become a worshiper of death, wanting vast numbers of people to die or be killed. This was seen recently at a “scientific seminar” in Texas, where “scientists” applauded the idea of most of the world’s population being wiped out in a plague.

Fewer people means fewer slaves to manage. And this is the inherent elitism of socialism. Most socialists feel deeply inferior to the average person. But they mask this inferiority complex behind a superiority complex. They think of themselves as elites, who should be masters over everyone else, who should in turn be their slaves.

For some reason, they long ago selected the ratio of 1:10, one socialist to rule ten slaves, and keep them in their place.

To make it even more annoying, they insist that the slaves should be grateful to their masters for giving them the “freedom” of slavery. And keeping the slaves down is hard work for which they want gratitude.

Socialists have long pushed ideas that involve group action, such as Obama’s Peace Corps idea. Mandatory service is even being forced on high school students as a requirement to graduate, and socialists call for it to be required nationwide, of course.

While their favorite group activity is group exercise, socialists can also be deeply militaristic, if not militant. That is, they are thrilled with uniformity in the ranks, military drill and ceremonies, and how they have a captive audience on which to experiment with social policy.

But socialists are usually disdainful of the real purpose of the military, as fighting in a war clearly shows superiority and inferiority, strength, courage, and character, which are generally lacking in socialists.

So indeed, the world the socialist left would create would be hellish, indeed. Not the hippie fantasy once promised, a world of peace, love and drugs; but a horrible place of dehumanization, poverty, slavery, murder, sickness and starvation. That is the “Hope” and “Change” the left promise.

>> It is hardly surprising that young people prefer the political left.

I question conventional wisdom that suggests young people are drawn to the political left. For the inexperienced, it is a matter of conditioning in my opinion, regardless of the reasons that would either justify or fault a particular point of view.

Abortion casts the darkest of shadows through which no happy light will shine. Sorry TS, but I’ll pass on the ‘happier living’ the left envisions.

For those who bother to study history, it was precisely the opposite policies in the 1980s — pouring tons of money into military equipment — which brought the Cold War and its threat of nuclear annihilation to an end.

I'll quibble with that. I'm one of those who thought that Communism and the Cold war was dormant for a while, but it's impossible to kill.

The nuke missiles are all still out there.

As long as there is a population of poor and oppressed, along will come a Communist leader who will convince the P & O that he is the solution to their problems.

It's human nature.
