Hurricane Ike is the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2008 hurricane season to threaten U.S. Gulf Coast states.
Reports from Turks & Caicos Islands describe 80 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. On Sunday, Hurricane Ike's position just north of Hispanola was hampering relief efforts for devastation incurred by Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Fay. The death toll in Haiti from Gustav reached 200 people.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist held a press conference Sunday morning shortly after a Hurricane Watch was issued for the Florida Keys.

Exactly!!
Rita was headed this way and turned north and hit far east of here.
Personally I think Ike will be north and east of Galveston Bay by friday. But if not I am pretty sure I can handle being on the bad side of a Cat 3. Not real sure but pretty sure. Hope the evaces, if they happen, go better then they did with Rita.
Then next few days could be real nail biters.
per WFTV in Orlando, evacuation order has been lifted in the Keys.
Hooray! We were getting worried about you. Wonderful to learn that you, your family and both of your properties weathered Gustav well. We missed you!
"CUBAN RADAR AND VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATES THAT IKE CONTINUES MOVING WESTWARD OR 270/12. [...but since models are...] NOW IN MUCH BETTER AGREEMENT THAT IKE WILL TURN SLIGHTLY WESTWARD IN ABOUT 3 DAYS. THIS TURN IS REFLECTED IN THE OFFICIAL FORECAST. HOWEVER...MUCH UNCERTAINTY REMAINS REGARDING THE STRENGTH OF THE MID-LEVEL RIDGE WHICH BUILDS IN THE WAKE OF THE EXITING SHORTWAVE. ACCORDINGLY...IT IS STILL MUCH TOO SOON TO KNOW WHAT PORTIONS OF THE GULF COAST COULD BE IMPACTED BY IKE."Right now, all those models STILL don't have an idea when Wayne will shoot - or even if he will. I'm glad that SHIPS seems to have come into line, at least.
oops... that should have been 11AM “discussion”, not forecast.
Where's Ogie Oglethorpe when you need him?
That is surpising. Ike will past pretty near the Keys, plus the Keys will be on the bad side of Ike.
See post # 281
Every update and that forecast line gets closer and closer to my house. lol.
I sure hope so. My parent's home is on the north side of Seawall Blvd. I've had a bad feeling about Ike even before Gustav made landfall. I read somewhere here at FR that this storm has followed the path, as best as can be determined, of the great storm of 1900.
The irony is that the 1900 storm is referred to as “Isaac’s Storm.” Ike is short for Isaac. (Cue scary music)
I thought the Ike reference was to Gen./President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Jeez louise, those are scary pics. I hope the Cuban gov’t found the decency to get folks out of harm’s way.
Ike is actually short for both Isaac and Dwight (why it is for Dwight, I have no idea)
LOL
