A Wasillan On Sarah Palin
The Atlantic ^ | 9/2/08 | Anne Kilkenny

Posted on 09/02/2008 9:48:55 AM PDT by steve-b

This was posted in the comments section on the Washington Independent by Alaskan and a Wasillan, Anne Kilkenny, someone who has followed Sarah Palin very, very closely - with too many city council meetings under her belt - not to say her piece....

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents. During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign. Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%.... She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million....

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter....

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the “bridge to nowhere” after it became clear that it would be unwise not to....

This is very similar to the attacks on .... ANY Republican candidate. Huckabee, Romney, Thompson, G W Bush, Qualye, Gingrich, DeLay, ... It’s all the same.

The Jerome Corsi book “The Obama Nation” tells the story about Barack Obama the liberal MSM refuses to write. All Corsi did was find the snippets of facts strewn all around like $20 bill the MSM refused to pick up.

This is the converse. They pick up bits of lint dog poo and announce “aha, I’ve found it!” as if it’s something valuable.

They are trying the Quayle-ize Palin. In 1988, the MSM could do that because there was no competition for the MSM.

We’ll see if they succeed this time.

What’s so much worse about Biden’s campaign plagiarism (in my view) is that he did not merely carelessly lift a sentence or two from someone else’s speech, he stole and appropriated Neik Kinnock’s own personal life story and made it his own. Now how demented is that, to appropriate someone else’s life story and pretend it’s your life story. That is not only unethical but really really really WEIRD.

Anyone who is “authentic” with real CHARACTER does not need to steal someone else’s life story. Amazing that the MSM cares far more about a 1986 DUI for the SPOUSE of the Repub. VP candidate (who should be off-limits for trial trash-talk) than for the actual, documented plagiarism and subsequent campaign abandonment of the VP candidate for the Democrats in the same era.

Now THAT encapsulates media bias and partisanship in a nutshell!!

oops, typing too fast — that should say that spouses of candidates should be off-limits for “TRIVIAL” trash-talk, i.e., it is irrelevant that anyone’s spouse had one DUI as a 21-22 year old before they were even married or a parent.

Not saying DUIs don’t matter, I am strongly in favor of cracking down on drunk drivers, just saying that one instance as a 21-22 year old, for someone WHO IS NOT THE CANDIDATE is trivial and should be considered off-limits.

Now if a spouse is very active in a political campaign ala Michelle Obama and makes assertions about what the spouse-candidate represents and will do in office, those kinds of things are highly relevant and “fair game” — but if Michelle Obama had one lone DUI as a 21-22 y.o. I would also say that is totally irrelevant to assessing Barack Obama’s fitness for the Presidency.

I mean, c’mon, MSM, how nutty-biased and partisan are you going to be for this election?

[uh oh, do I really have to answer that?]

It reads just like a small town letter to the editor rant. There are several obvious omissions, mischaracterizations of events and it’s just dripping with jealous bias.

Your post saddens me steve-b.

I've read many a post from you over the years here on FR.

I know you have strong opinions, as do many here on FR.

I have both agreed, and disagreed, with your positions here over the years, but I always assumed you were a conservative, and any disagreements I had with your positions could be classified as “agreeing to disagree”.

However, this post, and your other recent posts, do not rise to what I believed to be your conservative credentials.

Normally, to post from the Atlantic, from Andrew Sullivan, quoting a leftist, donating member of the Obama campaign in an article, with a lead-in comment motivating other FReepers to dissect the sour-grapes, innuendos, and falsehoods contained therein, would fit the conservative steve-b that I thought I knew.

But your recent postings, and in particular this one you posted without any comment about the sour-grapes, innuendos, and falsehoods contained therein, doesn't seem to be the old Steve-b.

The Steve-b I knew was fully capable of arguing logically about any concerns he might have about Gov Palin, resulting in some lively FR discussion about the pros and cons of her suitability for the VP spot.

Has someone stolen your FR account?

If not, I know you are better than this. Please rethink your approach. I always counted on you to add, not subtract, from the value of FR to conservatives, as well as all others who read FR for clearing away the garbage and getting at the truth (ref my tagline).

It was a joke.

The AP was listing the Palin’s “criminal record” and all they could uncover was a citation issued to Mrs. Palin for fishing w/o a license. Her future husband was convicted of a DUI 20 years ago.

The “uneducated crowd” was a reference to some pinko bimbo that claimed something along the lines of “uneducated supporters of Hillary Clinton will move towards Sarah Palin”. I am not saying you were a Clinton supporter.

I also forgot my sarcasm tag...sorry about that.

The ratmedia is child like in its failure to understand the Bell Curve. They find someone from the far end of the Bell Curve and think that person represents everyone. How do I know this woman is the odd one toward the end of the Curve? Sarah got elected governor, didn’t she? Well then whose at the end of the spectrum and who is in the middle?

from the NYT...I knew I'd find it...

Ann Kilkenny, a Democrat who said she attended every City Council meeting in Ms. Palin’s first year in office, said Ms. Palin brought up the idea of banning some books at one meeting. “They were somehow morally or socially objectionable to her,” Ms. Kilkenny said.
