ST. PAUL -- The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

I’d like to joke about this but I can’t... with McCain’s age and health history, Palin needs to be ready to do the full job as president. From Day One. Ask yourself honestly: is she ready?

When I mentioned that she was nursing, I got shot down again. My problem with nursing is that it’s work, and it makes the body tired. It’s very physical. You have to eat a ton while you are nursing. I don’t get some of this.

You still haven't answered my question from 2,518, so I shall restate.

Is a man incapable of taking care of children?

Why are you, and others like you, completely dismissing the father in this family.

OK, I’m beginning to lose my sense of humor on this.

I think some people are just using this as a political football. They want to undermine support for McCain and/or Palin. Their objections are irrational. I would respect criticism of McCain over free speech or borders. But most of the criticisms are below-the-belt cheap shots. Most of us on this forum know it too. This thread is driven by cheap, petty, cynical, heartless, politics of personal destruction.

The left and the Ron Paul kooks might try to Bork Palin, but this is backfiring.

McCain is a demi-marxist.

Let me ask you this. If you found out your 17 year old kid was pregnant would you run for VICE PRESIDENT?

I went back and saw that. Wow. How can people think that adoption is the easy way out, or somehow shirking responsibility?! We all can point out cases of young parents marrying and raising a child well, but those are not in the majority.

I am sick of the media focusing on single mothers, acting as if there is noting wrong with that. We need to say, again and again, that the best home for a child is a stable, married, heterosexual couple. Now of course, not every family is going to manage that in every instance. But it should still be the ideal.

She’s the best thing McCain ever thought of. I don’t know why, but he appears to have gone in the right direction on this.

It was a shock to me. I knew she was the one he should pick but I honestly didn't think he had it in him. Excellent & very wise decision!

Flaunting an unwed teenage mother is not a way to win conservative votes. Plus what a strain on this irresponsible girl who is too young to be either a competent mother or able to handle the strain of a rough presidential campaign.

Bingo. This is another McCainism. We thought we were being given a conservative that we could stand behind, but of course, McCain had to get the last laugh.

If character matters any more, I don't think someone that decides to quit parenting just when their 17 year old needs the most guidance has character. (A VP will not have time for much family interaction, not to mention uprooting them.) That's putting their career first. And encouraging teenagers to keep a baby is irresponsible if the grandparents won't take on the raising of the baby. Adoption to a stable, intact home is in the best interest of the little one.

I think McCain thought we'd be happy that there's 2 instances of pro-life being shown with this family. But another issue is that once a child is brought into the world, their welfare should be first priority. Teenage parents and grandparents out of the picture because of their careers and nonstop press coverage aren't good for the child.

You nailed someone early on the breast feeding question. The “Bork Palin” crowd doesn’t want to go back there.

If Palin becomes VP, trig will be about 9 months old. How long do you think she should nurse?

I'm thinking now Palin was chosen so the part of America that identifies with neglected children, working mothers, and screwed up families can identify with the GOP.

I'm thinking not.

She might be politically conservative, but not with how she runs her own life. Republicans used to be better than this.

How is Palin not conservative with how she runs her personal life? Because her teen daughter became pregnant? What else am I missing?

That’s why you’re trying to Bork Palin, isn’t it?

If parents are not responsible for their minor children who are. I’m appalled that people that claim to be conservatives accept teen pregnancy. Some around here actually revel in it.

I agree. I think many are so desperate to have a worthy candidate, they are finding one where there are serious flaws and overlooking them. Personally, at first she did seem too give especially given that McAmnesty chose her. He did manage to stab conservatives in the back again - by having us rally around a supposed 'perfect' candidate and then exposing a serious flaw that he knew about. If we still back her, then we are hypocrits morally. He set us up yet again.

Yes, we are responsible for our children. But suppose, at this very minute, my honor student, athlete, college-bound son gets it into his head (or any other part of his anatomy) to run out to his girlfriend’s house at lunch? I am a stay at home mom, I am on top of things to a larger degree than most parents I know. (Just ask my kids, they are thrilled with that!) We don’t go away for the weekend without the kids, they don’t go and just hang out . . .

But he does leave my sight. Smart kids really do screw up sometimes. (Pun intended!)

She wasn't around for the last 2 years (when governor). I don't think her daughter getting pregnant was an unrelated incident. Children raised one way and acting another usually do so for a reason.

You’re not going to succeed in Borking Palin over this.
The Virgin Mary declined McCain’s offer.

LOL. No bonding, neglected and screwed up?
As for working political mothers, she could morally refuse leadership. But as the saying goes, evil triumphs when good mothers do nothing.

I’m kind of amazed at the number of people that fit the description. Do you think McCain is that calculating?

When I grew up a pregnant teen was considered a girl in trouble. Now it seems to be considered...even here... No “big deal”. Let’s just forgive and forget. The other choice is forgive and fix...and make sure it does not happen again.

My husband has a similar theory. He was all for Romney (since hubby is more moderate than I and an MBA and tall to boot, he feels a certain kinship, perhaps) but then said that Romney would seem to “perfect”. Heaven forbid we have a candidate with a family that isn’t messed up to some degree . . .

Oh, I am going to regret staying in this discussion.

Dads ARE important. Did you not catch my comment about BOTH parents taking leave when a baby is born? If Dads weren’t important, why would BOTH take a leave?

But we are talking new babies here. Moms are simply more important at this stage. You may feel differently, but that’s the way its been since caveman days. Kids get older, it’s a totally different story.
