This appears to be a large topic of discussion over at Democratic Underground and Daily Kos. The diary at Daily Kos has over 800 posts, and three diaries have been spawned from it. They are discussing the Daily Kos diary at Democratic Underground as well. If you check out the link, you can read the diary with Solzhenitsyn's story. The stories are similar, but they aren't identical. The liberals are speculating that McCain either knowingly stole the story, or he is in the early stages of dementia and mistook Solzhenitsyn's experience as his own.
I give McCain the benefit of the doubt. It's certainly possible that both men had similar experiences. Afterall, Christianity transcends nations and people.
I say the accusers are liars. Prove me wrong.

All the “catterwalling” from the Dems proves one thing to me...they know their man was beat up and they’re trying to make excuses or distract from the sorry performance of Obama. McCain knew the questions, McCain made up a story, the audience was stacked in McCain’s favor, McCain mischaracterized what Obama believes...I said it this morning, but I’ll say it again, I’m going to start calling him Owaaaama!

Leftists are longing for a “Swift Boat” moment.... it’s perfectly plausible that such “cross” events have occurred a number of times in Gulag and prison camp situations — one would think that Christians in such circumstances would all think about when and if they should share such a moment with another Christian.
I have no idea how often it does occur, but drawing a cross in dirt or sand when that is the only possible communication available to two Christians under such extreme circumstances, well, it’s quite possible that there are such occurences on many occasions across the various Gulag and other prison camps run by vicious commie pigs.
Also in McCain’s favor is that the Solzhenitsyn story involved a fellow prisoner and the McCain story involved a guard, so the 2nd story is not any obvious copy. Could it have been “inspired” by the Solzehnitsyn story? Certainly conceivable, but without any actual evidence there is no reason to assume that McCain’s story did not occur as described. He certainly deserves the benefit of any doubt.
Obama is the one that told the whopper. Him and his abortion bullchit. Thats going to worry evangelicals more then some war story.

Remembering the story slightly different over decades is not uncommon. Had an experience like that. Ran into a old high school teacher. He remembered me submitting a plagiarized story. I remember him giving me an F and accusing me of plagiarism on a story I did not plagiarize. Dropped the class because I was so angry about his wholly baseless accusation. He claimed he read the same story I submitted while in Korea in 1954. How I was supposed to know, in 1982, of this story he read in Korea? How was he suppose to remember that story exactly some 30 years later? Curious thing, was unable to produce the story but clearly "remembered" reading the same story. Baseless yet he "remembered" it that way clearly.
So as any Lawyer will tell you, "memory" is fallible. So here is a real life example of a "memory" being recalled completely different at different times. I suspect something like this happened to McCain. I say those making this accusation are liars. Prove me wrong. But you cannot. This is why the Left delights in these sort of slanderous attacks. When they get caught lieing, they simply move on to the next attack wasting more time and effort from the Conservative forced to respond to the baselessness character assassination
I know you utterly loath McCain. Are desperate for anything to attack him on but this is utterly absurd.
