This appears to be a large topic of discussion over at Democratic Underground and Daily Kos. The diary at Daily Kos has over 800 posts, and three diaries have been spawned from it. They are discussing the Daily Kos diary at Democratic Underground as well. If you check out the link, you can read the diary with Solzhenitsyn's story. The stories are similar, but they aren't identical. The liberals are speculating that McCain either knowingly stole the story, or he is in the early stages of dementia and mistook Solzhenitsyn's experience as his own.
I give McCain the benefit of the doubt. It's certainly possible that both men had similar experiences. Afterall, Christianity transcends nations and people.

Well since the two witnesses to the event were McCain and some unknown guard at a prison camp, exactly how is anyone going to challenge him on this?
Without having us go to those sewage dumps, can you just tell us what the similarity is? Thanks.
Sore losers.
I’ll give you benefit of the doubt that you’re not a troll.
McCain has been telling it since at least 1999. It’s so cliche(IIRC early christians drew the fish symbol on the ground to ID themselves) that even if it’s false it’s not like he would have needed to steal it from Solzhenitsyn.
No thanks.
DUmmies and KOSholes!
Liars and traitors!
Great line. It would be so unseemly to publically doubt such a story without some proof it was doubtful. And the two stories according to the version the Dummie site are quite different.
The stories aren’t the same. The similarity is that someone made a cross in the dirt and a prisoner felt better because of it. Actually, McCain felt better because the ropes were loosened not because of just seeing the cross. So the stories aren’t even that similar.
Sorry, no win here.
Yes — Hussein cannot afford to be candid.
That is why he has to be “nuanced”.
A couple freepers went over to DU and KOS and found the exact quotes from his posts on FR posted there.
I hope Christians realize the sign of the fish was an
underground symbol used by the young persecuted
church.
One person would draw half the fish in the dirt.
If the other person was a Christian, they would
know they were supposed to draw the other half of
the fish.
The practice of conveying one’s faith in Jesus Christ
with the sign of the cross or the fish is a common
practice today. In oppressed countries, being a
Christian can mean prison or certain death.
Daily Kos hasn’t a clue.

Please... please forgive the multiples pings, but
we mustn’t let the left use this to malign McCain.
The passage was posted on an earlier thread. IIRC Solzhenitsyn writes about how he sat down in exhaustion and despair, fully expecting the guards to come over and beat him to death at any moment and resigned to his fate. Just then another prisoner comes over and draws a cross in the dirt. Solzhenitsyn has a revelation that there is a power greater than the state, one that will outlast it, and it gives him the strength and determination to get up and endure.
He made a Christmas ad about it last December. No uproar then. Wonder why now? sarc
Those people at du are so deluded and hate filled you need a hazmat suit to venture in there. They are seriously deranged. I took a look over there during the primaries and they were so vulgar and just plain nasty with their own people (clinton supporters) I could hardly believe it. It seemed like some sort of evil brainwashed cult, no logic, no discussion.
