Beijing - A smiling, flag-waving and cheering United States President George W Bush was on hand to cheer on Michael Phelps and the rest of the US team at the first finals of the Olympic swimming competition on Sunday.

Phelps said after his 400m medley win in world record time that the first thing he saw as he put his head out of the water was the president waving a flag.

'That was a very emotional moment,' the seven-time Olympic champion said.

Bush was expected to watch the basketball match between the US and China, but also paid the Olympic competition a morning visit in Beijing's impressive Water Cube.

Surrounded by a group of bodyguards, the US president sat amongst a host of other dignitaries. He soon took his jacket off and opened the top buttons of his shirt to feel more at ease in the hot arena.

Bush was then given an American flag, which he soon started waving as Phelps set a world record in the irst final of the morning.

When the American anthem abruptly ended during the flag raising ceremony for the 400m medley Bush was the first to start waving his flag and became involved in his own personal 'flag-waving-contest' with American fans sitting in the stands opposite him.

The Chinese appear to be working as administrators for Free Republic.

They just pulled my post from the forum about the yellow (not skin color but

cowardly) and evil communists attempting to disgrace President Bush and the

USA by DELIBERATELY cutting short the National Anthem as the words, O’R

THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE would have come.

I cannot believe that there is ZERO outrage over this ugly, evil red commie

stunt. I guess the America I remember is no longer. The fat and sleeping

American majority are in for a real comeuppance when “Global Rule” takes

over. (To the keen eye, it already has.)

It is clear one FR administrator is already working for China.

And here is their exact “Big Brother” reason for doing so.

President Bush looks great as Cheerleader-in-Chief.

On another note, they say you can tell what a young woman will look like in the future based on her mother.

It looks to me like Barbara Bush will be beautiful forever.

Wow! I'm going to go out right now and spit on a Walmart.

No doubt that Barry would do the same. /s

The fact that the national anthem was cut short confused me.

Whatever President Bush has done or done wrong...we will miss him, trust me.

I read an article today that said the liberals were disappointed that Barry didn’t stick to his guns. So what is their bitch with W??

It’s nice to see a president who’s got a pair, as opposed to that castrati vacationing in Hawaii...

I am sure that having President Bush there cheering them on helped inspire our athletes to even greater effort.

Looks like he's getting a little inspiration too. I know I would be!

So, how did you actually phrase your response?? I’ve been here a couple of years and I think the moderators are more than generous.

Lot’s of people are outraged by the truncated National Anthem.

Our President was very defiant.

This Board is not run by the Chinese. Get a grip.

It wasn’t just “ cutting short” the National Anthem! That is the most insipid, gutless, incorrect, moronic, watered-down, revolting instrumental version of THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER I have EVER heard....rivaling most of the nauseating solo vocal versions. Our GooseStepping hosts have no right to select the version of our National Anthem they will allow. A CD of the anthem by the US Army Band, The US AirForce Band, The US Marine Corps Band, or the US Navy Band, or the Boston Pops, needs to be forwarded IMMEDIATELY to Beijing. If you agree with me, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Why dont you protest about NBC cutting 1/5 of the opening ceremony, or changing the order of nations to keep America watching later into the night?

I have heard the US anthem played correctly several times in two days, and what happened was probably a glitch.

Agreed totally. We need more adjectives - everyone contribute, please! Let’s start with morose and moribund! The creepy modulation in the middle made my ears bleed.

When I was in Band, long long ago, it was the Navy version all the way. I can still hum the sousaphone counterpoint to this day.

NBC is doing a great job with these Olympics. I haven’t seen one single “up close and personal” crap segment yet. Just sports.
