Lieberman ‘on McCain short-list’
Financial Times ^ | 08/09/2008 | Stephanie Kirchgaessner in Washington

"Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic vice-presidential nominee who has endorsed John McCain, is being vetted as a potential running mate for the Republican presidential hopeful, according to an adviser to Mr McCain’s campaign."

"Conservatives would be pissed as hell – I think you would have a revolt, but sometimes John does what John wants to do,” the McCain adviser said.

“So you’re saying our country “deserves” Obambi and the Rats in power?”

No. I’m saying Lieberman won’t help McCain win and could hurt his chances.

We have what? 200,000 registered members on FreeRepublic...but about 200 of them are responsible for painting us all as 'scary extremists' who want to peek inside our bedrooms and tell a woman she has no personal rights.

I'm going to read between the lines & translate that your comment means that you are pro-abortion. I am against it, and supposedly, so is McCain. THAT IS NOT MY BEEF WITH HIM. His stance on illegals and amnesty is my biggest beef with him, but my goodness - there are so many other issues that I cannot abide with him.

It's people and politicians like you that are the reason that I am no longer a member of the Republican party. You have made it clear that you don't want people like us around. Good luck with that, I don't think it's a successful strategy for you & I think that it's that kind of thinking that will ultimately destroy the party. I would like to see a poll done here on FreeRepublic - if what you say is true, and if 90% of Freepers agree with you, then I will leave this site.

...We’ll survive 4 years of Che Obama but this would send the GOP and conservativism back 50 years.

I'm afraid it may be even worse than that. Once a socialist wealth-redistribution program becomes law, WE'RE STUCK WITH IT FOREVER. Even after it's proven to be a failure, the gov't will throw more and more money after it in perpetuity.

It may take an armed revolt by conservatives to ever gain power back after the inevitable collapse, seeing as how we seem to be facing legions of socialists airheads pumped out by academia.

“No. It’s stupid to try to use the ballot box on Election Day as a protest tool.”

Some people think more than one move at a time, some don’t.

Do you see a reason to facilitate the election of Obami?

If so, I hope his list includes some thoughts on his next line of employment. Not featuring the word “President.” Unless it’s “President of the John McCain Fan Club.”

I disagree, Will88.

I think POTUS McCain...having WON without the support of the wacky RIGHT fringe...will be able to use the mid-term elections in 2010 to further stop the extremists in both parties from gaining influence.

The Gang of 10 is a perfect example. None are ideologues. They are all centrists.

Those are the voices that will arbitrate a comprehensive energy plan for the future of our country.

McCain...and Lieberman are the perfect choices to flip off the Far Left and Far Right...and get this country running smoothly again.

Your points are well-taken in some respects, but I disagree that McCain is political death for even the “wacky far-right fringe.”

The same thing, for example, was said after the election of Eisenhower (another military man who was elected as a Republican not because he was a Republican, but because he was the right man for the times). Yet Ronald Reagan came along.

This is part of the ebb and flow of history, not Armageddon.

We don’t need a majority to cause trouble. We need a few determined House members.

“If that’s the best kind of R we can get in CT, we should take it.”

There’s nothing preventing Lieberman from caucusing with the Rs now if he wanted to. If Harry extends his majority, there’s talk of stripping Lieberman of his seniority and homeland security committee chair after the election.

No mam....not Pro-Abortion. I am personally Pro-Life.

I am Pro States Rights....it’s a State’s Rights Issue.

As far as a poll...I would like one too.

It is no accident that the many fine FREEPERS who indulge the daily threads...the Canteen threads...the Friday Silliness threads....REAL CONSERVATIVES....avoid the immigration threads like the plague.

It’s just a small cabal that paints us all as ‘kooks’...with the assistance of the MSM.

Lieberman will drive away far more votes than he attracts.

“McCain...and Lieberman are the perfect choices to flip off the Far Left and Far Right...and get this country running smoothly again.”

Just who do you consider the “far right” to be. Do you have any idea how many Republicans in Congress are being elected by conservatives, from southern states and mid-western and western states? If you think you’ll just spit in these folks face over and over and still have their votes, their you’re delusional.

You’re just the sort of elitists, nose-in-the-air Republican snob who’ve assure the party minority status. You’re kidding yourself that there are millions of Dem. voters just waiting to jump to the Republican side. And any anti-Obama vote this year will not necessarily become a long-term Republican vote.

Specifically what changes in major issues do you think Republicans need to make that will attract all these new voters?

Well....I would agree with you, fighinJAG.

Except that Obama plans on having a Domestic Police Force in the same size and scope as our military...under the Homeland Security mantel.

FreeRepublic could be shut down as a hate site.

How soon after that will it be before Martial Law is invoked? How soon after that will be have our own rendition of "The Night of Broken Glass" the way German populations attacked Jewish businesses, etc..

Transpose Jews with Conservatives...and you have it. And don't tell me it can't happen.

“The Gang of 10 is a perfect example. None are ideologues. They are all centrists.”

Yes, they are a perfect example of how the Republicans can throw away their best issue this election year, and do damned to improve domestic energy production in the process. There was a thread on that yesterday, and few if any thought the Gang was a good idea.

And, almost no one thought McCain could possibly have approved of the Gang. I was and am very suspicious that he did approve because of his sidekick Lindsey being right in the middle of it.

Do you like the Gang of 10, and do you think McCain approved of it?

You’re just the sort of elitists, nose-in-the-air Republican snob who’ve assure the party minority status.

Let's try to do without the personal attacks...for a change. Let's agree to debate this as gentlemen, okay?

I am a Goldwater Conservative. Not a Jerry Falwell or Tom Tancredo Conservative.

And if Ronald Reagan were alive and lucid today...he would agree with me. He understood that the country has a penchant to go Left. He understood that getting 51% of what you wanted is a victory of sorts.

The Religious Right had been very influential in bringing us Ronald Reagan in 1980. But he would have won in 1984 regardless of their support. Since then...IMO, they have a over-inflated sense of themselves.

Now that the contrast between the parties is clearer...and Cultural War is being fought in the open...we need to win elections....not cling to one-or-two issues...demanding litmus tests of our candidates.

Actually, from a tactical standpoint this would be a good move.

McCain continues moving to the middle, thereby narrowing Obama’s ‘target market’ to the kook-fringe left.

I’m not saying I agree with the move so put away the flame throwers.

I see no reason to vote for a 70-something Republican candidate, who apparently couldn't find a single Republican

This is why McCain will do it, just to spite conservatives.

I think this is a character flaw for McCain, do the wrong thing just to stand alone.

This might be a "good" move for the short term single election.

But it is a bad move for the next election. He will be denying a Republican the VP stripe next time around. That is a RAT advantage.
