I'm Doing Some Baking - Culinary Advice Needed
8/06/08

Posted on 08/06/2008 10:22:34 AM PDT by MplsSteve

I apologize for posting this question in News/Activism - but this is the most widely read category in Free Republic and I want some opinions.

I have a recipe for oatmeal brown bread. It's really good. It's a very hearty tasting wheat bread that uses oatmeal as well.

In the recipe, it calls for using lard.

Is it possible for me to use Crisco as a substitute - or might that affect the taste of the bread?

Thanks for your advice!

Crisco will work fine and won’t affect the taste. Use the lard for frying french fries and making gumbo.

Did you read the story about the guy who called 911 because the sandwich shop forgot to put sauce on his sandwich?

Me? I’d use lard, and feed it to muslims.

But that’s just me...

Crisco should be just fine. Just DON’T use canola oil. I tried that ONCE...

Using my 'momskillz,' Crisco is better for baking than lard. And if you have butter flavored Crisco you will be delighted by your final product.

Crisco should be fine. My guess is it's an old recipe at a time when lard was more readily available. My guess is you would probably enjoy the taste more with Crisco also.

Save the lard for homemade refried beans.

Crisco will do fine. Vegetable oil and olive oil just doesn't work like Crisco and Lard. I grew up on lard and Crisco and is why my blood when spun looks like Crisco on top of RBC’s.

Crisco’s just fat in a can. You can’t go wrong with lard.
lard noun 1. the rendered fat of hogs, esp. the internal fat of the abdomen.
