Daley hints he may drop fight to keep handgun ban

Mayor Daley on Friday cracked the door open to abandoning the costly fight to uphold Chicago's 1982 handgun freeze -- if he can fashion a replacement ordinance that protects the safety of first-responders.

Until now, Daley had promised to defend Chicago's ordinance all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, despite what he called the dangerous precedent set by the court.

On June 26, the Supreme Court overturned a Washington, D.C., handgun ban on grounds that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to possess a handgun in your home for self-defense.

The National Rifle Association then filed lawsuits seeking to overturn handgun bans in Chicago, Morton Grove, Evanston and Oak Park.

Wilmette and Morton Grove preemptively repealed their bans.

Now that both suburbs have thrown in the towel, and newspaper editorials have urged Daley to do the same to save millions in legal costs on a fight he can't win, he appears to be having second thoughts.

At a news conference called to tout the 6,848 guns collected at last week's gun turn-in program, Daley was asked point-blank whether he would continue the legal fight to keep Chicago's handgun ban.

"We don't know yet. ... We're not gonna run away. We're gonna try to figure this out," he said.

Under further questioning, the mayor said city attorneys would simultaneously contest the law and work on a possible replacement.

Chicagoans with guns in their homes might be required to have insurance to protect taxpayers from frivolous lawsuits, he said.

"We're talking about putting first-responders in a very, very delicate position of people being armed without being notified how many guns they have in their homes," Daley said. "We have to be able to fashion a law that truly protects first-responders and protects the citizens."

Daley is so used to being able to pick and choose which laws to obey, which to ignore, that even a pronouncement from the Supremes is of no importance to him. It’s good to be God. But now the NRA has shoved his halo up his ...and some city attorneys have told him to get over the discomfort! Arrogance like his will demand he try to weasel around it, but I don’t think the NRA, etc, will forget Chicago anytime soon.

Sounds to me like he’s going to watch the DC council regulate *around* the SCOTUS Heller ruling and follow suit.

All these city officials have to do is enact regulations that de facto ban guns until they’re challenged in court, then enact new regs which restrict the same thing.

I’m not that interested in Chicago and what they do but I can’t wait to see the lawsuit against Oak Park. I used to live there and was a member of the Oak Park Freedom Committee which was organized to fight ban.

It was pretty bad. We had opposition members attending out meetings. We had our car license plates written down. We were harassed.

We failed to screen some of our members and one of our top people gave an embarrassing speech as to how he should be elected to the Illinois legislation.

I put the house up for sale and couldn’t sell it after dropping the price by a third.

I had a town housing inspector on the roof of my house who wrote me a ticket for having dirty gutters. He used the ladder I had against the house because the next day, I was going to clean the gutters.

My brother in law was locked up for having a gun in his sock drawer. He was eventually charged with not having the Illinois gun owners card.

The 2nd Amendment lawsuits are starting to pile up. Add those on top of the lawsuits pending for the stupid Children's Museum they're trying to foist on the Chicago citizens in Grant Park (which - by law - is supposed to remain completely UNDEVELOPED), and now you're talking big legal bills.

As the idiot DEMS who run the city and also the county find themselves with major-league budget shortfalls, it may become reality that they just cannot - literally - defend their idiot stupid anti-Constitutional policies.

Apparently the Chicago cops are too busy beating up female bartenders to do anything about the gangs.

I hear ya but that's old news by now.

Actually - as of late - it's the current (relatively new) Chief of Police who stirred up trouble within his own ranks with some sort of non-supportive maneuver that sent a message of sorts to the street-beat cops which is leading to a decline in morale which then leads to the diminishment of willingness to do the necessary tactics to fight the gangs on their own turf.
