IN GENTLENESS THERE IS STRENGTH

The parents were devastated. Their young adopted daughter had died in an unusual accident. She suffocated when the drawstring on the hood of her jacket became caught in a playground slide. It was later learned their child was not the first to die this way. Design flaws in both the hood and the slide made this an accident waiting to happen.

Some people might have viewed this tragedy as an opportunity to sue the two major corporations for a lucrative settlement. The parents, however, refused. In an interview, the mother said she would have seen any remuneration as "blood money." She and her husband believed the leaders of the two companies never intended to harm her child or any other child. Instead of a lawsuit, the parents appealed to the clothing and slide manufacturers to correct the design flaws which had led to the death of their daughter. Both companies took immediate action. Today the parents are leaders in a campaign to promote child safety, and the companies involved have contributed substantially toward their cause.

It is not always wrong to sue. There are times when it is the prudent thing to do. It seems, however, that our society has become increasingly litigious, suing without discretion for profit and personal gain. In light of today’s litigious climate, one cannot help but be moved by the choice of these parents not to sue. Instead they chose a "higher ground," earning not only the willing cooperation of both companies, but strong allies in their campaign to promote child safety as well. We might say they took the "pure, peaceable and gentle way" described in the third chapter of James in the Christian scriptures (James 3:17) as opposed to the adversarial way offered them by the courts. An ancient Native American saying reads, "In gentleness there is great strength." Dag Hammarskjold, former Secretary General to the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, put it this way, "Nothing is so strong as gentleness, and nothing so gentle as true strength." In the end, the gentle, peaceable way of these parents demonstrated the greater strength and wisdom.

Made it to your new digs, huh? Good for you! Did you ship stuff? Has it made it there? Or are you making do with an airmattress and microwave? An uneventful trip?

POD...do you pack those yourself? Did everything arrive in the same condition as packed?

Glad you now have your stuff and are getting settled. Hope you have some time before starting work.

LOL!!!

The lawn chair is a VERY vital part of the healing!!

I spend a lot of time in it outdoors...except when it's REALLY hot.

Summer is fine although it DOES get a little too hot for me once in a while.

I've noticed that since the surgery I don't do that well in really hot (above 95) weather.

But it'll get better.

Maybe all the drugs have helped make you sensitive to the heat. Do your nurses have giant fans to help cool down Dad?

I don’t handle heat above 75 very well and I have no excuse.

Have you and all your girls been able to get out at all?

When last we “spoke”, pain management was tough....is that getting better?

2.5 hours!! Get a good nights rest, eat breakfast, and stay alert! Hopefully your orientation will be interactive.

I like the idea of being responsible for your own packing, but hoping that the moving folks are careful with how they treat the PODs. Glad stuff got there safe and sound. So many horror stories of the moving folks making a real mess of things.

Your post got lost yesterday. Sorry! ;-)

Temple.

I lived at 13th and Spruce in a renovated old hotel in a one-room apartment on the 18th floor. It was my first place on my own and I have great memories of my time in Center City and the surrounding areas like Vet Stadium or Stone Harbor and Wildwood in the summers, etc. Oh, and Pat's Cheesesteaks!
