North Carolina sheriff's deputies left the children of an arrested illegal immigrant woman on the side of a highway overnight stranded in a car, attorneys say.
Lawyers for Maria Chavira Ventura say she was stopped June 14 for a traffic violation along Interstate 85 in Alamance County, N.C. Deputies arrested her for driving without a license, leaving her three children, ages 14, 10 and 6, alone in the car with a man they barely knew, the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer reported Wednesday.
The man, a church acquaintance who was catching a ride with Ventura, abandoned the children in the car, where they stayed for eight hours before their father, also an illegal immigrant, arrived to rescue them, the newspaper said.
Lawyers with the North Carolina Justice Center told the News & Observer they are investigating the incident. Sheriff's Department officials said they handled Ventura's arrest according to their policies.
Sad that she put her children in that predicament. Pretty pathetic mother.
Mom picks bad friends.
If ONLY the whole family had stayed in the same country as where their documents are located. When will they ever learn: STAY WITH YOUR DOCUMENTS!!
Don’t care what she was doing wrong or what her status is. There’s no excuse for leaving kids like that with some stranger. Generally, when someone is arrested and there isn’t a family member there, don’t they put the kids into foster care or protective custody of some sort? Anyone with any common decency - ‘protocol’ or not, would have made sure the kids were safe.
Cops missed one there. Protecting life and property is supposed to be a big value thing for LE. I don't care who's children they are.

Lessons for Mom:
(1) don’t live in countries where you are not a legal resident or citizen, especially with your 3 children
(2) don’t give rides to strangers with your children in the car - especially the kind of stranger who would abandon your children when you are arrested for your illegal activities
(3) don’t operate a motor vehicle without a valid license
I’m sure there are plenty more, but that’s a start.....
And kids should learn to choose their parents more carefully!
That should be worth millions!
No sympathy here.
I believe in moral absolutes. "Don't Put Children in Danger" is high on that list.

His name wouldn't happen to be Baraq Obama, would it?
Mom needs booted back to the border, with a reminder that endangering children is a crime.

You’re right.
Apparently they don’t in North Carolina. They probably do have a nominal service agency but most of the personnel are fictitious with local politicians and their families pocketing the paychecks... non-existent care facilities and beds that the taxpayers pay for. You know the drill.
Lesson for Cops
1) Don’t leave children on the side of the road.
end of list
Yes, she shouldn’t have broken the law, but these policemen did the wrong thing here. Children should never be left unsupervised and usually, the police are careful not to do this, even if the parents have been arrested for worse things than this.
Agreed. Decent people do not abandon children. I don't know which is worse - the supporters of illegal immigration who will exploit this story or some people here who seem to be glowing in sanctimonious joy that children of illegals were potentially in danger.
I agree, send her back from whence she came. However, I cannot see where the police left the children in danger. They were left with an adult that was in the company of the mother at the time of arrest. There is no mention of objections being made by the mother when she was arrested. After the arrest, the man abandoned the children on the side of the road. He is the one who endangered these kids.
The cops didn’t leave the kids in the car, the guy who they assumed was the father abandoned the kids.
