For Some Ohioans, Even Meat Is Out Of Reach

by Yuki Noguchi

All Things Considered, July 17, 2008 · A generation ago, the livelihood of Gloria Nunez's family was built on cars.

Her father worked at General Motors for 45 years before retiring. Her mother taught driver's education. Nunez and her six siblings grew up middle class.

Things have changed considerably for this Ohio family.

Nunez's van broke down last fall. Now, her 19-year-old daughter has no reliable transportation out of their subsidized housing complex in Fostoria, 40 miles south of Toledo, to look for a job.

Nunez and most of her siblings and their spouses are unemployed and rely on government assistance and food stamps. Some have part-time jobs, but working is made more difficult with no car or public transportation.

Don’t sweat the small stuff, my FRiend, we all know there are those types out there claiming to be conservatives while actually embracing the nanny-state.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip.

"Vulgar" could be defined as slathering oneself with sanctimony while purporting to be a Christian.

Paved Paradise has been trolling the smoking threads for years now, and has yet to acquit itself.

Pay the oxygen thief no mind.

It thinks that publicly displaying its mental illness is clever. I pity the poor creature.

Imagine waking up inside that head every day, envious of people like you who manage to enjoy life.

Sad.

Imagine all the money and time that is wasted in a place that sucks the life and finances out of so many pathetic lives (and the innocent children and spouses of these people as well); money that could be spent on making the world a better place.

Say what you want but until just this century, gambling was considered vulgar. It still is but our culture has been desensitized.

Sad to think of how smoking, as it deprives one’s blood of precious oxygen, also deprives one’s brain so as to prevent actual clear and cohesive thought; it apparently also causes forgetfulness too because you posted on here a couple of years ago that you would not post me anymore.

I realize that some of those people NEED those jobs and I am sure some of them are single moms, etc.

FWIW, I have a relative that is a big gambler and when she goes into a casino, they roll out the red carpet for her. She is also the biggest con artist that ever lived and has conned many a man out of money. She’s aging though so I don’t think too many men are going to be suckers much longer.

Only recently (i.e. since Vegas was built by the mafia), has gambling become considered “mainstream.” Historically, it has always been considered vulgar. Just considering that Vegas was built on money from ill-gotten gains and corruption is enough to keep me away, but knowing how many people’s lives are destroyed by it makes it abhorrent to me.

You will never hear me say I am perfect and I don’t believe I am a better person than you since I don’t even know you. You might be the kindest soul that ever walked the earth.

However, I do think gambling is a sickness and a scourge.

Incidentally, if you hate Ohio so much, why do you even stay here? Nevada has better weather and Pennsylvania has better sports teams.

As for the money you won, perhaps you had a good night, but all-in-all, I’d be interested in knowing your net winnings over the years.

I would not step foot in a casino any more than I would a brothel unless it were to help some poor soul, the way you were helped.

As for how you spend your money, obviously it is a free country and you are not doing anything illegal. If you and your husband wanted to blow your entire salaries from both of your jobs on gambling that is your business, but I can still have my opinion and thought about what I think gambling is and does.

I don’t have the luxury of extra money now since I’m going back to school, but when I did, my money went to buy shoes, clothes and medical supplies for the poor in the countries where my church does mission work. I’ve gone on a mission trip myself and have supported many mission groups in the past.

The Bible says to “redeem the time for the days are evil” and it also says we are not to have anything to do with “get rich quick schemes” and I lump gambling into the latter, and the fact that wasting time in a casino would not be redeeming the time.

Again, no slander to you personally, but I note that a lot of these addictive behaviors go together (drinking, smoking and gambling).

P.S. I don’t want ANY tax dollars in Ohio to come from this filth. And, incidentally, you will never see casinos ever come to any wealthy communities, that is a fact. The rich people don’t want that stuff in their backyard so why should I just because I’m an average joe?

Oh really?????

The ones in Delaware are not exactly in the section 8 housing sections.........

I agree with Madame Dufarge in regard to sanctimony.

If they are that helpless they should just lay down in the street and die!

It would seem that someone with your obvious shortcomings would be devoting more time to self-improvement and less to pointing out what you imagine to be deficiencies in others.

Point your talons at yourself once in a while; the world will be a better place for it.

“Imagine all the money and time that is wasted in a place....money that could be spent on making the world a better place.”

Ah, the collectivist’s true agenda. From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

Thanks for making your position crystal clear for all to see. Kind of ironic that it would fall in line with the author of this thread’s article.

This is the type of thinking that is hurting my once great state of Ohio — telling others what they can and cannot do — and it has got to stop (as Rush says).
