Rapid changes in the churning movement of Earth's liquid outer core are weakening the magnetic field in some regions of the planet's surface, a new study says.
"What is so surprising is that rapid, almost sudden, changes take place in the Earth's magnetic field," said study co-author Nils Olsen, a geophysicist at the Danish National Space Center in Copenhagen.
The findings suggest similarly quick changes are simultaneously occurring in the liquid metal, 1,900 miles (3,000 kilometers) below the surface, he said.
The swirling flow of molten iron and nickel around Earth's solid center triggers an electrical current, which generates the planet's magnetic field.
The study, published recently in Nature Geoscience, modeled Earth's magnetic field using nine years of highly accurate satellite data.

Eventually, the current piece of ice we call the North Pole, might be near the current position of West Virgina. I hope it is not still ice, by then. ;-)
We find the most amazing evidence of tropical rain forest existing, where now there is nothing but desert, and snow.

Are there any physicists on here? Do magnetic fields propagate faster than the speed of light?
(Not sure if propagate is right word.)

The MAGNETIC poles flip periodically and often (geologically speaking). Do a google on “magnetic bands seafloor spreading” and it will probably come up with info. I think it was in WWII in developing submarine detection that they noticed fairly regular bands in the ocean floor. The basalt comes up in the middle ridge, pushes the other rock to the side, and cools. When the iron-rich magma cools the iron aligns itself to the pole. When the poles reverse themselves, the magma iron points in the opposite direction, giving a magnetic anomaly. This has happened thousands of times just remember what the band maps look like. This also contributed to the theory of plate tectonics.
It has happened so often without catastrophic die-outs or whatever, so I think it is fairly benign. And I think it does happen fairly quick (geologically speaking). But now the concern is what will happen to electronics, satellites, etc. Does the magnetic force weaken for a short time when it flips - thus allowing the sun's ionic wind to enter in to our realm?

Thanks all, for the info. I always get a kick out of parts of the scientific community who doubted these theories when they first came out.
As one example of the theory, some pottery that exhibited signs of a reversal (evidently picked up the magnetic patterns when they were in the kiln) were offered as proof. The “scientists” claimed that the pottery was put in upside down.
Perhaps that was the origin of the phrase “Denial is not just a river in Africa.”
And, perhaps, we have an “interesting” future - mebbe the Mayans figured the poles would reverse Big Time (aka catastrophic) in 2012. :-)

Do magnetic fields propagate faster than the speed of light? Light is apparently made of magnetic and electric phenomena and the magnetic component being part of light would propagate at the speed of light.

As an engineer I sometimes think that Christ being the life and the light he has the power within himself that as he travels to these lower realms all things realign automatically. like a magnet and some ferrous material, all align to the source of power..interesting thoughts..perhaps the tilt is not a function of the earths core materials but the reaction of Christ attention and possible appearance, either the realm aligns itself, or is so far from being a conductive material due to its sins(darkness)that the light and power flux repels the darkness causing these affects.. I know, huh? Just some food for thought..Come Lord Jesus!!
You never know, not to be offensive or anything, it sort of reminds me of the old "Orbit Guard" from the ALF cartoons detailing his life on Melmak before he came to Earth. The "Orbit Guard" maintained the orbit of the planet as well as other functions to keep it going, otherwise, it would be destroyed. IIRC, I think every Melmak male had to be in the Orbit Guard" and they were called up for duty to run the machines at the center of the planet. It was on in the late 1980's, 1987 to about 1989, it's been a while since I saw ALF either on his original show or the cartoons.

On a site with such a strong emphasis on personal responsibility, how can you blame the poster for your mistake? By now, you should have the example of countless others before you, and know better than to drink and FReep. Shame on you! ;-)

If you are directly on the equator, and pull the plug in the bathtub, which way will the water swirl?

On the equator, the water won't swirl, unless it is given a preferred starting direction, as in a toilet. Think of the earth as being stationary, but covered with railroad trains traveling along the parallels. The train at the equator is moving about 1000 miles per hour, while the trains at the poles are simply rotating one revolution per day. The trains moving in between vary from near zero speed to 1000 mph. If you jump from train to train from the North Pole going south, you must accelerate sideways to the right at each jump because the trains are moving ever faster. This is the Coriolis force which causes the swirl.
From the South Pole going north the acceleration is to the left. At the equator, the forces are small, since the relative speeds are similar, and there is just as much water flowing south as there is flowing north.
