5. John F. Kennedy, Jr.- July 16, 1999 Jfk2 John F. Kennedy, Jr., son of the 35th president, died along with his wife Carolyn Bessette when their plane crashed into the Atlantic en route to Marthas Vineyard. Kennedy was piloting his Pipier Saratoga II HP on a dark and hazy night when the crash occurred. It is believed that Kennedy, who had not yet been qualified for instrument flight rules conditions, was likely disoriented by the conditions.

Lynard Skynard/Payne Stewart = Tragic, Devastating, Saddening, a sincere loss of talent and skill and irreplacible.
JFK Jr/Paul Wellstone = Unfortunate
Thurman Munson doesn’t even make the top ten anymore?
But if we’re gonna play, they left out Barbara Olson, Will Rogers, Glenn Miller and Audie Murphy. :(
I also think his particular aircraft had auto pilot which, had he thought to use it if he felt disoriented, would have brought him wings level and gotten him out of trouble.
They seemed to have missed Glen Miller.
They have the wrong year for Wellstone. His crash was in 2002.
A pretty grim topic. Stewart and his cohorts on the plane were long dead before the Air Force showed up. Their job was to down the plane if it threatened to crash in a residential area. They knew what happened when they got there since as experienced pilots they had seen it before.
I would rank Patsy Cline as number one with Buddy Holly a close second.
What about Ron Brown?
Apparently not. Maybe the author was a Red Sox fan.
I remember reading about the crash. Munson was one of the few Yankees I actually liked...really tough, good player, but not a jerk like Reggie Jackson.

Clemente was one of the all time greats though his career was cut short. He got his 3,000th hit at the very end of the 1972 season.
“Actually, he wanted to be Sen. from New York, but got in Hillarys way”.
...there’s no doubt that JFK Jr would have won a Senate seat in NY in a landslide and would be running for POTUS under the dem ticket this very moment with a landslide victory in his sights.
Ask Ron Brown about how airplanes and Clintons mix.
Must be a French plane? ;)
I’ll wager Alan Kulwicki (sp?), NASCAR Champ.
Barbara was one of my favorites too.
Audie Murphy, celebrity and MOH recipient.
Barbara Olson wasn’t an accident, she was murdered.
Her FReeper name was BKO in case you didn’t know.
Sorry, but as far as the weather goes I personally saw and heard eye witnesses claim there was a haze at the time he was in the area. I lived on Cape Cod at that time and the coverage was, as you can imagine wall to wall.
Then you have this:
FACT: He had 40 hours in that one aircraft. His total experience was about 300 hours, more than enough to qualify him for a commercial pilot’s license. According to FAA statistics, 300 hours made him a more careful and safer pilot than one with 1000 hours, who is more complacent.
When I was learning to fly I was told the most dangerous time for a new pilot was between the 200 and 300 hour mark because having gotten that far new pilots thought they “knew it all”. I can testify that is the case and only almost getting myself killed brought the word “humble” back into my vocabulary.
It is tragic that he had to take others with him.
Yeah, one of the great losses of out time..../s
Icarus
It explains why the Kennedys are in the tank for Obama...
