ARLINGTON, VA-- U.S. Senator John McCain today issued the following statement regarding today's United States Supreme Court ruling on District of Columbia v. Heller:
"Today's decision is a landmark victory for Second Amendment freedom in the United States. For this first time in the history of our Republic, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was and is an individual right as intended by our Founding Fathers. I applaud this decision as well as the overturning of the District of Columbia's ban on handguns and limitations on the ability to use firearms for self-defense.
Unlike Senator Obama, who refused to join me in signing a bipartisan amicus brief, I was pleased to express my support and call for the ruling issued today. Today's ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller makes clear that other municipalities like Chicago that have banned handguns have infringed on the constitutional rights of Americans. Unlike the elitist view that believes Americans cling to guns out of bitterness, today's ruling recognizes that gun ownership is a fundamental right- sacred, just as the right to free speech and assembly.
This ruling does not mark the end of our struggle against those who seek to limit the rights of law-abiding citizens. We must always remain vigilant in defense of our freedoms. But today, the Supreme Court ended forever the specious argument that the Second Amendment did not confer an individual right to keep and bear arms.
Good words. If he can say that kind of thing with conviction in a speech or debate he should be able to walk all over the obamination.
Now if he would only "grow" on some other issues (like ANWR for instance, not to mention McCain/Feingold abomination.)
McCain and the GOP need to publish he-whose-full-name-must-not-be-spoken’s gun right’s voting record AND his statement today about the Heller decision. This needs to be a huge talking point.
BOOM!!!! hehehe
He will grow on the other issues.
Democrats are probably celebrating this ruling as well. Now that gun control can be taken off the table, the dems can try and regain the votes of the conservative "Reagan Democrats" who abandoned them years ago over social issues --of which gun control played a huge part.
Now the dems don't have to talk about guns --which for them has been nothing but a vote loser.
It still allows governments to license firearms or deny the right to keep and bear arm by denying those same licenses.
“gun ownership is a fundamental right- sacred, just as the right to free speech...”
Oh, you mean “free speech,” John, as in running political ads 60 days before an election? :-/
This only “takes the issue off the table” if people choose to forget what their intent is, even if their ability to implement that intent on the rest of us has been diminished.
The Supreme Court and Liberals are turning America into a dictatorship while the sheeple sleep.
Well Juan said the right words. Too bad his voting history doesn’t confirm the words, but maybe he’s had a change of heart. We can hope that anyway.
Don’t underestimate what Obama would do as president. He would simply say there is a *need* for 11 justices instead of the current nine - and then proceed too stack the Court with leftist-liberals until he has a majority.
LOLOLOL!!!!
Yes, but now the Democrats can safely ignore the small, but vocal, gun-control lobby who have cost them votes in election after election.
It’s nice to see McCain delivering a real smackdown on a democrat. A very rare event!
