Here is a little Trivia about John Wayne. Did you know..... That in 1980 he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award,by then President Carter
That he was voted the 4th Greatest Movie Star of all time by Prmiere Magazine. That he adressed the Republican National Convention on its opening Day in 1968.

Click here I wanted to have this tribute ready for his 101 Birthday, but circumstances beyond my control prevented it,so I saved this for the 29 th Anniversary of his passing.
John Wayne was not only a patriot and hero on the screen, but also in true live.
I hope you all will enjoy this thread.

Aloha Night Owl!
The Army Colt Peacemaker didn't come along until 1873. Most of the west had been won by that time...with a few exceptions like modern day San Francisco, LA and Seattle.

Most of the Indian fighting was over a few years after the peacemaker came out but there was plenty of action until the early 20th century. Even his favorite model 92 Winchester was still appropriate for some encounters.
The worst problem the movie industry has is showing the cavalry with lever action model 92s or even 1894 models during the time when they would have been carrying Springfield single shots.

John Wayne lived large in Arizona. He ran a cattle ranch in the Tonto National Forest area north and east of Payson, AZ.
As a teenager, I visited a place called Kohl’s Ranch on US 260...it was an early sort of B&B at the time.
I came out of my cabin early in the morning with coffee, and spied an older cowboy across the parking lot. I howdied him, and he came over to chat. It was John Wayne. I was awed in his presence, but he turned out to be just another old cowhand that morning; sharing coffee and a brisk mountain morning and conversation.

My grandfather had a pair of Winchester 92s. A 25-20 and a 38-40. We couldn't use them where we lived in upstate NY, only a shotgun with slugs was ok’d for deer. But we headed up to the Adirondacks and over into Vermont to use the rifles. The 25-20 was pretty much worthless in the thick forest but the 38-40 would clear brush, trees and bag a deer.
