Most of the Indian fighting was over a few years after the peacemaker came out but there was plenty of action until the early 20th century. Even his favorite model 92 Winchester was still appropriate for some encounters.
The worst problem the movie industry has is showing the cavalry with lever action model 92s or even 1894 models during the time when they would have been carrying Springfield single shots.

My grandfather had a pair of Winchester 92s. A 25-20 and a 38-40. We couldn't use them where we lived in upstate NY, only a shotgun with slugs was ok’d for deer. But we headed up to the Adirondacks and over into Vermont to use the rifles. The 25-20 was pretty much worthless in the thick forest but the 38-40 would clear brush, trees and bag a deer.
