This past Saturday (6/7/08) my wife and I took our kids to the Statue of Liberty. They are 10 and 13 and it was their first trip to NYC. We took the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and were to proceed on to Ellis Island.
Like most tourist, we were taking photos and helping others to take group photos as well. As we got close to the front of the Statue, we saw a young, 18-22 year old young man step on top of the wall separating the grassy area from the sidewalk which circles the statue. Below him stood his mother and father to take his picture. He posed for his picture, Lady Liberty directly behind him, with his right arm lifted and middle finger extended. He was clearly mocking the statue... and America.
I started to get mad and told my wife to look at him. As I started to walk towards the family, my wife begged me to go no further. I did not want to create a scene, nor did I want to argue with my wife. My heart was racing.
As I stood and watched, the mother (late 40's) was helping him pose and told him to curl his middle finger instead of holding it straight. As the mother, son and father all laughed, there was not a single person around who was looking at them or approaching in disgust. I could hear the family talking and laughing, but the language was not American. It sounded like a cross between German and Russian (is that possible?) My wife was trying to look away, so I walked close to the family and spat on the ground behind them in absolute disgust. They looked around but I was moving away. Then I stood and stared in my green reflector fishing glasses.
Again they started the pose. This time my 10 year old daughter saw him holding a water bottle between his legs at the crotch like he was peeing while giving the finger. My wife came up and said "let's go!" I said OK, just give me a second. I got a large loogy in my mouth, walked up and spat in the middle of them, took three steps back and stood and stared. They looked somewhat shocked and a little intimidated. I did not break my glare. They looked around as if someone might come and take me away. After about 15-20 seconds when that did not happen, they packed up their camera stuff and walked quickly away and got in the ferry line. The laughing had stopped.
Did I do the right thing? Could I have done something "more American"? I felt very angry about the way they came on our soil and mocked our most cherished symbol of Liberty and Freedom. Have you witnessed other acts of Euro punk desecration? How dare they do this and no American set them straight.
You did the right thing. You stood up for our country and your kids saw that you did this..you did not let the eruotrash get away with that.
Truth be told, and despite the Ugly American charge against us, the Europeans are haughty and frankly jealous of our country. They think of us as upstarts who have not paid our dues when in fact we have bailed their sorry a$$e$ out of two world wars and now are trying to get them to understand the threat of terrorism that is right in their midst..yet they don’t and won’t support us in an effort to defeat that with the exception of the Irish, Brits, Aussies, and a few others...the mainstream europeans...can go to H$II
Well done!
When I was in Scotland a couple years ago touring Glamis Castle ( birth place of the Queen MUM) there was a group of Germans in the whole group of us and they talked loudly over the docent and we could not hear the history. Finally a Brit with Grit told them to button it up, be polite or get out. We should do no less..and just because the $$ is weak just now is not an excuse to let them get away with insulting our country..we don’t need their euros that badly. Lord knows they don’t have anything that we don’t excpet for old buildings...and bad teeth.
Yea, I was wondering that. The southern slavic imo can sound like either depending upon the words and dialect.
except....Taco the cat was helping me type..what can I say...he loves the computer and FreeRepublic.
Almost one who actually lives in NY has ever set foot there.
I am SO tired of hearing the “f” word and other slang words and seeing the “finger” when something happens that is just probably a mistake. It’s all about ME nowadays.
Lately, I just stand by and clap with a stern look on my face when someone is being rude. I also love to pull up to someone who has tried to cut me off to get the spot right in front of me at a red light and just give them a hand (clapping that is!) and mouth bravo to them.
Sad, but there are really many ugly Americans who go to other countries so some come here and act bad to get us back. But, thanks for giving them a piece of your mind as the world probably thinks we are just cut-and-runners when things aren’t going our way. Just like the war, we aren’t fighting it, we’re just putting up with it, IMHO.
I meant, almost no one from NY has been to visit the Statue.
Did American soldiers save your family from the Nazis?
Or was your family supporting the Nazis?
Good one. But if the situation ever arises for you to use this phrase against Eurotrash, here the correct German translation:
Haben Amerikanische Soldaten ihre Familie vor den Nazis gerettet? Oder hat ihre Familie die Nazis unterstützt?
They hate America and all she stands for but thank God every night the Soviets or Nazis aren’t their overlords.
You should not have done that.
Next time, please spit on the punk.
Well, I do and I have.
Point taken.
But I would guess that law enforcement presence on Liberty Island is far more concerned with potential terrorist activity than a scuffle between two non-terrorists.
You da FReepin’ Man!!!!
I agree 100%!
All I can say is that I hope all Americans will wake up and start standing up for what is right and good in our country and not let the Euro, Asian, Middle Easterners mock our contry anywhere without a fight or argument.

Thank you for protecting our country’s honor. If my family were there we would have joined you.
I’m 110% with you my FRiend!
