Likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has resigned from his controversial church, Trinity United Church of Christ.
We dont want to have to answer for everything thats stated in that church, Obama told reporters in Aberdeen, South Dakota during a rare Saturday night press conference.
Obamas church came under intense scrutiny after videotapes were discovered of Obamas longtime friend and former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright making anti-American and racist statements in sermons earlier this spring. Obamas initial reaction was to defend Wright, until Wright engaged on a media tour and reiterated many of his most offensive remarks.
Questions about the church were renewed last Sunday when another one of Obamas Chicago friends, Father Michael Pfleger, made racist statements pointed at Obamas Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
"Rev. Moss, when Hillary was crying, and people said that was put on, I really don't believe it was put on," Pfleger said, recalling Clintons tearful press conference during the New Hampshire primary. "I really believe that she just always thought, 'This is mine! I'm Bill's wife, I'm white, and this is mine! I just gotta get up and step into the plate.' And then out of nowhere came, 'Hey, I'm Barack Obama,' and she said, 'Oh, damn! Where did you come from? I'm white! I'm entitled! There's a black man stealing my show!
Obama expressed regret at having to leave his church of over 20 years. I did not anticipate my fairly conventional Christian faith being subject to such challenge and such scrutiny, he said in South Dakota.
Obama noted his resignation should not be interpreted as a denouncement of the church. Its not a church worthy of denouncing, he said. Obama said his critics theyve seen caricatures of the church and accept those caricatures despite my insistence thats not what the church is about and theres not much I can do about it with a defeatist tone.
TUCC issued a statement that said: Though we are saddened by the news we understand this is a personal decision.
Obamas decision came shortly after a contentious meeting ended in Washington D.C. by the Democratic National Committee to determine how delegates from Michigan and Florida should be seated. Both states were punished by the DNC for moving up their primary dates and were thus stripped of their delegates.
The DNC decided Saturday to seat half of the delegates from Florida and Michigan and to specially allocate 69 of Michigans delegates to Clinton and 59 to Obama.
The compromise was fought intensely by Clintons surrogates who are unhappy with the outcome of the meeting. Clinton campaign strategist Harold Ickes said at the conclusion of the meeting that Clinton had asked him to reserve the right to challenge the compromise with the Democratic Credentials Committee. This tactic has been deemed the nuclear option by political analysts since it would likely extend the Democratic contest until the Democratic convention in Denver.
That Church doesn’t preach Christian doctrine.
Thank you for the correction. Your absolutely wright.
My husband and I listened to Senator Obama’s bumbling explanation yesterday. It is VERY obvious that he has swallowed the liberation theology message, which is NOT the true Christian Good News. This is why leaving his church changes nothing.
I am also amazed that Senator Obama seems to think that we might actually be unable to understnad that what he is doing here is simple political pandering. Amazing....
You're gonna need a bigger bus.
Do you notice how the media ignores the congregation in all of this?
Everytime Rev Wright or Father Pfleger are on a rant, you can hear the congregation going right along with it in racous laughter and righteousness.
Obama is a member of that same congregation. He cannot separate himself from this racism so easily since he was a part of it for 20 years.
So it's not because of what Wright and Moss and Pfleger were saying, it's because you just don't want to have to field questions about it?
In another thread Obama was quoted as saying he was leaving the church because he didn’t want to have to continue explaining them. He didn’t condemn them, he’s leaving because he doesn’t want the millstone around his neck during his run for office. That’s throwing the church under the bus.
But “Black Liberation Theology” is not Christianity. I’ve never been to such a church, but I question whether they even “worship” God. It would appear they “use” God’s Word as a means to roil the people against Whitey and the U.S.
> That was the basis for charity and care for the poor.
Yes, but charity, by definition, is voluntary.
It is good that you retracted, “..doing battle for the poor.” This has been used as cover by totalitarian thugs and Marxist rabble all over the world.
Remember, first Obama said Rev Wright couldn't be denounced, then he denounced him. Now, Obama says Trinity United doesn't deserved to be denounced. But that's just Step One. Wait for the next couple of weeks, when Minister Farrakhan speaks at Trinity, then that Church will suddenly deserve to be denounced.
And man, oh man, what a trinity at Trinity: Wright, Pfleger, Farrahkan. What is wrong with Chicago? Is that what 100 years of Democrat Party rule brings?
“Mr. Obama believes if we just sit down and talk with those who hate us we can turn Iraq around. Funny that he couldnt do it with his own church.”
You mean that Senator Obama doesn’t “practice what he preaches?”
;-o
Apparently they do not accept out-of-country signatures, but I will pray for your success and will say an extra Rosary today for the removal of this shameful excuse for a priest.
“Im surprised at how badly he does when he doesnt have a teleprompter to read from, a lot of stuttering and false starts.”
In this case, it was even worse. He was attempting to talk about FAITH and, since I suspect he is lacking in this area, he had to consider his words even more carefully. If he had a secure faith, that would not have been so necessary.
Spinning like a top!
B Hussein o had better get high lift gas shocks for that bus. Not much room left under there.
If TUCC is A-OK, why is he leaving it?
Yeah, “under the bus” was my first thought....Mine too.
There’s a commercial (pony?) in there somewhere.
First he threw his Grandma under the bus
Then he threw the reverend under the bus
And then the whole church went under the bus
What’s next?
Will he throw all of US under the bus?...
So now it's down to just two, the Father and the Holy Ghost?
LOL!
"Fairly conventional"? What lying sack of dog poop. There is nothing conventional about his brand of "Christianity".!
