Mocking of Clinton at Obama’s Church Reverberates
The New York Times ^ | May 30, 2008 | Susan Saulny

Reverberations from the Sunday sermon of a Roman Catholic priest who mocked Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton at Senator Barack Obama’s home church here continued to spread Friday, after the priest offered an apology and the archbishop of Chicago gave him a public reprimand for “partisan campaigning.”

In a guest appearance at Trinity United Church of Christ, the priest, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, who resigned about two weeks ago from an unpaid position on the Obama campaign’s Catholic advisory council, delivered a tirade against Mrs. Clinton that included fake tears, a high-pitched voice and top-of-the-lungs screaming. He also gave a racially tinged critique of so-called “white entitlement,” of which he says Mrs. Clinton is guilty.

“When Hillary was crying, and people said that was put on — I really don’t believe it was put on,” said Father Pfleger, 59, the white pastor of a predominantly black South Side church. “I really believe that she just always thought: ‘This is mine. I’m Bill’s wife, I’m white and this is mine. I just got to get up and step into the plate.’ And then, out of nowhere, came, ‘Hey, I’m Barack Obama.’ And she said, ‘Oh, damn. Where did you come from? I’m white. I’m entitled. There’s a black man stealing my show.”

Father Pfleger, a well-known longtime activist and friend of Mr. Obama, issued an apology late Thursday. “I regret the words I chose on Sunday. These words are inconsistent with Senator Obama’s life and message, and I am deeply sorry if they offended Senator Clinton or anyone else who saw them.”

The Clinton campaign repeated on Friday, for a second day, its displeasure with how Mr. Obama has handled the situation, calling for him to reject Father Pfleger more forcefully.

However it got inserted into the tax code, it is there now. It is still the law. Same with McCain-Feingold. However bad, it is still the law. Think we can get away with breaking that law?

"This is the one taboo subject nobody talks about, but what kind of people belong to this church?"

It's frightening to know there are so many people, not just in that church, but across the country who gladly fill those kinds of pews.

Jesus has been asked to preach at Trinity and has accepted. What would Jesus say?

I know, I know! Of course this church would never want such a person to preach, but just play along with me.

I’d like to know just how many black churches there are like this in the US. Because these churches are filled with hate just like some other religion that shall remain nameless.

Hatred and bigotry cannot be taught in churches. And a man like Obama is UNWORTHY to be president.

As the general election unfolds Obama will begin to speak about the social injustice that is the root cause of abortion. He will appeal for a better approach (an understanding) by society of our need to respond to the call of the unborn.

In Illinois, Obama voted "present" twice on bills that would allow doctors to resuscitate infants who survived partial birth abortions. He will make no statements about guarding the life of the unborn. That assertion would simply be silly.

I wouldn’t put Hagee in the same category.

From the 2007 article about Rev Flakey and gun laws:

One definition of “snuff” was “to sniff or smell inquiringly”.

And there was a hint that the Rev might be gay.

I dunno. Is there something a little bit logical here?

Can you dig it? ;-)

you’re right, he’s a lunatic, NOT a PRIEST.

“...what kind of people belong to this church?”

I would make a safe bet that many of the members of Trinity United Church of Christ are employed in government jobs given to them because of affirmative action. They have no respect for themselves, so they don’t respect those who have worked to get what they have. They have to compensate for their inferiority complex by accusing those who actually achieve on merit of having an advantage because of race.
Affirmative action has been a curse to this country. It has fostered racial resentment in every segment of the population...another unintended consequence of liberal social engineering.

He got pretty dramatic...But think back to one of the Dem debates...She said the "boys" were against her...and I have no doubt she meant the white boys.

She never considered Obama as an opponent until it was too late....After all, she WAS the wife of the first black president...It was HER BASE(actually Bubba's).

So, what he said was NOT wrong in context. The church was just not the right place for this rabble rousing.

“Has the national discussion on race relations that Barry promised started yet?”

The discussion started on day one of Obama’s appearance. Wounds have been opened and the unintended consequences(or maybe intended)have set race relations back many years.

The professional race baiters are relatively quiet and take great pleasure in seeing their vehicles of hate refueled with divisiveness.

People are making a huge mistake in underestimating the skill and toughness of Obama the politician.

I agree with you. I think we have already had some stunning examples of how crafty and ruthless he is.

As for his believing what he is saying, I think it depends on what he is saying to what audience. What he really believes is radical left-wing insanity, racially driven, and probably with a serious tinge of Islam that he doesn't dare be open about (associating with NOI types is about as far as he dares to go). But what he really, really believes, more than anything else, is that he deserves power. He is completely driven by the desire for power.

And that is something to be underestimated at our own peril.

They had a program on the "schooling of ministers". It showed "how to rant", how to get the audience worked up. It was pretty disgusting.

What I didn't expect was this type of rant to come from a Catholic Priest. I always found their lectures calm.

As a Roman Catholic, I think Faher Pfleger should be sent to a remote island for about 10 years.

It's hard for me to believe he's a priest. He seems to trying very hard to become a black "minister".

In all my years of Catholic School I have never heard a priest even raise his voice during his sermon.

Its not just Rev. Wright that is the problem...its the entire Church!

You've got that right, Cowboy. The congregation was almost hysterical in its agreement with the reverand. He preached hate and they ate it up.
